OVERVIEW • ITU, ABU, and NBTC (Thailand) jointly proposed a new 4-year initiative on broadcasting in the Asia-Pacific region • Policy makers and regulators need to have a comprehensive and profound understanding of the global broadcast trends and their impact on the market and regulatory framework • Regulators have an important role in help shaping the future of the industry • Platform and framework for international coordination and cooperation should be put in place • Beneficiaries are the Member States and the Industry • The initiative to be launched at the Connect Asia-Pacific Summit, 18 November 2013, Bangkok, Thailand
OBJECTIVES • Help governments formulate a clear vision on global broadcast market trends and the future role and position of their broadcasting industry; • Provide important input to policy makers and national regulatory authorities in their strategic planning process and help setting long term regulatory objectives and measures; • Provide a regular platform for knowledge sharing and networking among various stakeholders in the region; • Promote and encourage creative contents and innovations in the industry; • Promote international cooperation among international organizations, governments, national regulatory authorities, and the industry.
EXPECTED OUTPUTS • Annual Asia-Pacific Regional Symposium for Broadcasting Regulators and the Industry; • Annual Media Innovation Awards; • The first Symposium tentatively to be held in Thailand • Publications e.g. case studies, market analyses guidelines, etc. relating to broadcasting • Platform and framework for international coordination and cooperation e.g. forum, website • Direct country assistance e.g. technical assistance, expert assistance, is also expected subject to available resources and agreement with partners
KEY ACTIVITIES & TIMELINE • Oct 2013: Call for “Expressions of Interest” • Develop a Project Document • 18 Nov 2013: Announcement of the Initiative Sign an agreement • 2014: • The 1st Asia-Pacific Regional Symposium for Broadcasting Regulators and the Industry • The 1st Media Innovation Awards • Cooperation mechanism e.g. web portal, meetings • Capacity building e.g. training • Expert assistance to countries • 2015-2017: Continued activities
