Group Assignment • Sort into your consulting groups • Each group will be assigned a set of motivation theories • Your job is two-fold: • Identify similarities and differences between the models • Identify implications of each model for managers seeking to improve motivation/performance
Motivation: Theory and Practice • Content or Needs Theories versus Process Theories • Study: Motivation of University Faculty • Managers must find incentives that are applicable across a diverse range of employees fulfilling a range of tasks and that fit management/organizational goals • Limitations of motivation theory
Shared Savings Program • What is the organizational dilemma or problem here? • Who are the different actors and how do their motivations differ? • Prior to Shared Savings, how did Soderbery discern employee motivation? • What was his HR strategy? • Problems with Shared Savings? • Other pay-for-performance strategies? • What might affect the success of Shared Savings in the future?
Assignment # 3 – Two Options • You have two choices for this third assignment: • 1) You can complete the assignment by Week 12 • Your grade will be computed as outlined in the syllabus • Indicate this option on your third paper • 2) You can choose to use your best two papers • Two papers will then become worth 45% of your grade – 22.5% each • No requirement to turn in all three • Do not have to notify me in advance
