International Year of Family Farming 2014 • December 22nd 2011, at 4.55 pm, New York time, the UN General Assembly declared 2014 the International Year of Family Farming-IYFF . • World Rural Forum supported by hundreds of farmer organizations and other societies has initiated to promote family farming year 2014 • Overall goal encourage policymakers to focus on sustainability and development of the farmer “The time has come to re-launch farming, and the international Community should not squander the opportunity.” Jacques Diouf, the General Director of (FAO) “Feeding the World, Caring for Earth.”
Facts of World 1020 million people suffer hunger About 3,000 million people live in countryside 2,500 million are farmers Celebration of an International Year Dedicated to Family Farmingwould create a unique opportunity to develop means, which would assure in the medium and long term, a prosperous and sustainable family agriculture development in the rural and fishing areas on all the continents, especially, in the developing countries.

Situation of Family Farming in Nepal • Mainly subsistence oriented and yet not capable of feeding the people and facilitating economic development of the country • Average annual growth rate of agricultural productivity is only 2.7 to 2.8 percent occurring during past two decades. • The soaring food price is affecting the food security and increasing vulnerability • Agriculture is becoming least preferable vocationto young generation within rural areas
Situation of Family Farming in Nepal • Difficulties of accessing fair prices, resources and production inputs such as land, water, pasture, local high quality seeds and equipment • Aging of the rural population due to migration of younger generations to urban centers. This is reducing the number of young people involved in Agriculture. • Challenge of climatic changes and increased incidences of natural disasters. It has increased the vulnerability of both water intensive cropping system and rain fed agriculture. • Lack of effective recognition of women’s roles in agriculture
Situation of Family Farming in Nepal • Lack of participation of small farmers in decision making processes and policy formulation. • Volatility of market prices due to different market factors e.g. political instability, unfair trade practices. • Lack of policies and institutions that facilitate and strengthen family farming • Government of Nepal recognizes the role of private sector, cooperatives and NGOs and has been more open to public private partnership in agriculture sector although there are several gaps in implementation.
Objectives of Celebration of Family Farming in Nepal Goal: Improved the living condition of rural women and men family farmers in Nepal Objectives: • To lobby and policy advocacy in favor of Family Farming, in the context of the IYFF-2014 • To identify and raise awareness of the issues and opportunities of family farming in rural areas.

Completed Activities • Formed International Year of Family Farming 2014 National Implementation Committee Nepal • Formed International Year of Family Farming 2014 National Directive Committee Nepal • Formed an advisory committee of well known personalities • Developed placards, banners and pamphlets • Designed and distributed Jackets with IYFF Logo to promote family farming throughout the country. The jackets have been mainly distributed to farmer members. Farmers wear the jackets during important events like annual general assembly, celebration of special events, rallies, march pass and meetings to show solidarity on family farming. • Organized mass orientation/awareness program on family farming in 75 districts of Nepal
Completed Activities • Organized rallies/march pass program on family farming in 75 districts of Nepal • Organized mass orientation/awareness program on family farming at 500 Village Development Committees • Organized signature collection campaigning • Recognized and awarded 500 best farmers, who have been doing inspirational family farming • Organized press conference two times to inform activities of family farming via different media. • Organized interaction programs in three Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science Campus under Tribhuvan University to inform and motivate students and faculty about family farming.
Completed Activities • Participated in regional and international family programs • Developed separate website www.familyfarmingnepal.net.np(Preliminary stage) • Provided financial support to buy clay pot to 125 families of Kathmandu valley to promote rooftop vegetable farming. • Conducted 100 capacity development trainings at VDC level for farmers leaders • Conducted six capacity development trainings for young farmers leaders • Developed television documentary and have been broadcasted from Nepal Television • Developed three radio jingles of family farming messages and have been broadcasting from five radio FM networks in prime time
Outputs • Government of Nepal recognized effort of NC Nepal and UN’s announcement, and formed IYFF National Directive Committee under patronage of Honourable Minister of Ministry of Agriculture Development (MoAD). This committee is chaired by secretary of MoADwhich includes 19 members representing different ministry and some farmer’s organization. • Government of Nepal assigned the secretariat role of National Directive Committee to the NACCFL, farmer organization. • Government of Nepal sanctioned Rs. 10 million to celebrate family farming year 2014 • Family farming year 2014 succeeded to linked farmer organizations with government organization • Formed strong network of agricultural experts, representatives of farmer organizations, agro-journalists and farmers. The efforts of the NC Nepal are already paying off. To mention a few examples:
Outputs • Honourable Minister and Secretary of Ministry of Agriculture Development, Local Development Officers, Major Political Parties Leaders, Policy Makers, Journalists and Concerned Stakeholders interacted with small and family farmers • Government of Nepal and policy makers have shown commitment to make pro family farming policy • National and local newspapers, radio networks and television highlighted news, articles and activities of family farming year 2014 in Nepal. • NC Nepal has planned to celebrate family farming even after 2014.
Expected Results • Information of the FF will be disseminated at least 50% of the Farmers of 14 Zone and 75 district of Nepal. • It will be further increased eventually and reach up to 100% in next three years • Involvement and motivating youth in FF • The target beneficiaries are fully sensitizedon climate change, food security and food sovereignty • Production of Well documented research paper on FF • Introduction of FF in university curriculum • Increased dialogue and support between policy makers and rural farmers • Formulation of family farming friendly constitution, law and policies
