Progress last 12 months • Panama Canal expansion study underway • North American Short Sea Shipping Steering Committee • Roundtable in Gulf Region • MOU signed with EU re: short sea shipping • 18 Corridors designated • 8 Projects designated • 3 Grants awarded • 6 Initiatives designated • 3 corridor studies underway • Dual Use Vessel study underway

  6. California Green Trade Corridor Tiger Grant • DOT Tiger Grant Funds provided for landside improvements and two barges • Service set to start Oct. 2011 • TEUs already booked • Major relief of congested I-580 corridor

  7. James River Container Expansion Marine Highway Grant • MARAD Marine Highway Grant Funds provided for purchase of barges • Service started in 2008 • Moves approx. 450 TEUs per month • Provides relief of congested I-64 corridor

New MARAD Sponsored Studies Underway • Each has a Marine Highway element included • Dual Use Vessel Study (with West and East Coast market research) • West Coast Corridor M-5 • Inland River Corridor M-55 • East Coast Corridor M-95 • Great Lakes Study • Panama Canal Study • Missouri River Study NEW

  9. Each Corridor Study includes: • Summary of existing studies for region • Identification of prime MH Markets and industries • Tailored business plans • Optimal operational models • Due Dates: • West Coast, M-5 – Feb. 2012 • East Coast, M-95 – Mar. 2012 • Inland Rivers, M-55 – Feb. 2012

  14. AASHTO’s Role? • Encourage State DOTs and MPOs to incorporate water into their transportation planning • Help identify maritime expertise within State DOTs and MPOs • Help recommend more efficient use of limited funding to maximize freight movement 15
