eagle-imaking the business case Richard Pearse, PhD, and Joanna Brownstein, MSW, MBA on behalf of the eagle-i Consortium
Problem Statement • The ingredients needed to perform an experiment can be developed from scratch, purchased or borrowed. • The ingredients are expensive to make. • Identifying an existing resource can be time consuming without a system like eagle-i. • A researcher will have to do research, write emails and make calls to track down existing resources, and there’s no guarantee that they’ll ever get the resource. • In a good scenario it can take 1-2 months (best case is 2 weeks, worst is 1-2 years) to receive a resource. • The value of time in research cannot be overstated.
eagle-i Goals • Foster biomedical research nationally by helping researchers find scientific resources more easily • Help reduce time-consuming and expensive duplication of resources by researchers who currently are unaware that such resources exist • Accelerate the development of much needed diagnostics, treatments, and prevention strategies
The eagle-i Resources • Model Organisms (Animal models, Knockouts (deletion mutants), Transgenics (addition mutants), Natural mutants, Others) • Reagents (DNA constructs, Antibodies, Cell lines, Others) • Core Facilities and Services • Biospecimens • Human Studies • Student training opportunities
Cost Assumptions for Knockout Mouse • Some numbers (for knockout mice): • Raw cost to develop a knockout mouse from scratch = $24,100 • Time to make one Knockout mouse = 1.5-3 years • Number of knockout mice known to have been made = 10,814
Key Questions • How do we quantify the real-world value of sharing resources? • monetary value, • value of more efficient research and faster results • What is the most compelling case for researchers to use eagle-i? • What is the most compelling case for institutions to join the network? • What is the most compelling case for continued financial support for eagle-i?
