Against the use of wiki as an academic source Phuong Le CIS 1055 Sec. 5 November 15,2010
Reasons why people use it: • Easier to understand • Gives out general facts of what you need to know about the topic • Less searching needs to be done
Reasons why you should not • Not all information on wiki has reliable sources • Information given on wiki is too general to be use as a primary source • Have to do more searching to make sure what you are reading is reliable and up to date facts
Reasons why you should not cont. • Some info has no scholarly resources • Open to the public • Does not go into depth about a certain topic
Reasons why you should not cont. • Reading information on wiki can be tricky • There’s no one there to validate the information
Reasons why you should not cont. • Can be a starting point to look up topics that are simple such as sports or music • Looking for information for educational purposes will be difficult • Can waste up a lot of time
Reasons why you should not cont. • Anyone can put their opinions on any facts or topic that’s in wiki • Should be the last place to look
