  1. SVA MALAWI – BANGWE 2014

  2. -We are looking for 12 volunteers to live and work in Bangwe, a community just outside of Blantyre- Malawi’s second biggest city.

  3. The Country -Malawi is a small country in south east Africa with a population of close to 16 million. -It is often referred to as ‘the warm heart of Africa’ due to the friendly nature of its people.   -The official languages are English and Chichewa, although there are many other regional languages spoken.   -It is heavily reliant on agriculture and its main export is tobacco.   -It is home to the third largest lake in Africa, Lake Malawi, as well as the third highest mountain in Africa, Mountain Mulanje.

A bit more about Malawi • -Malawi is currently struggling with combating the rapidly growing problem of HIV/AIDS as well as trying to develop the economy and tackle poverty. • -Malawi is one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world. • -In 2012 the previous president, BinguWaMutharika died.  After presidential disputes Joyce Banda, the first female president of Malawi, gained presidency in May 2012 bringing a huge change to Malawi’s democratic government.

  5. Breakdown of work on project 1 . Teaching • Schools • Orphan care centres 2. Tutoring youth with disabilities 3. HIV/AIDS Support Work 4. Gender Equality Work 5. Construction project

Teaching: Schools • SVA Malawi works closely with three primary schools in the community. • Volunteers will be split into pairs and allocated one of these places to support teachers in classes such as English, Maths and any other subjects which they feel confident in. • Volunteers will teach every morning Monday to Friday, throughout the project. • We also wish to continue the ‘summer schools’ we ran last year which provide extra education during the holiday months, where volunteers will be able to take a more creative approach with arts & crafts and sports. • Next summer we hope to better establish a learning support initiative within the schools.

  7. Teaching: Orphan Care Centres • This year we will be working at three local orphan care centresin the mornings, Monday to Friday. • You will be involved in the daily running of the centres which includes teaching, feeding the children and playing games. • Some centres will require assistance with the internal running of the organisation.

  13. Construction Project In the past, volunteers have used their fundraised money towards various construction projects around Bangwe. These have included a Victim Support Unit, playground for Bangwe youth centre, piggeries for income generation activities and BAHASI- orphan care centre.

  14. You will be hosted by the Umunthu Foundation, a local Non-Government Organisation who we have worked closely with for a number of years. • You will live in a guesthouse situated close to the recently built clinic.

  15. Details & Fundraising • The project will last for 10 weeks, with room for travelling afterwards. • The starting date will depend on the volunteers and the NGO, however volunteers should be free from the middle of June to early September. • Flights and vaccinations are personally funded. Flights will cost around £800 and vaccinations around £100. You will also need to provide spending money for extra activities during project and travelling after, but this amount totally depends on what you want to do! • You will be expected to raise £10,000 (between the group) for the project itself.
