  2. Challenges Facing Health Systems • Complex changing environments • Economic climate • Changing policy arena • Meeting the needs of a diverse & changing population; e.g. ageing population, dementia, obesity-related ill-health, mental health. • Rising expectations of population

  3. So…What skills are needed to solve such challenges? • Leaders and innovators • Creative problem solvers • Ability to ask the right questions • Able to use evidence to bring to bear on the complexity • Good decision makers • Strong quantitative skills • Understand the policy environment

  4. Degree Structure • Three years study plus a year in placement taken at the end of year 2 • Modules include: • Mentored research training • Understanding health systems. Health policy - Why do health systems look like they do? • Social science of health systems: psychology, sociology, economics, law, anthropology, demography. • Managing health systems: organisational behaviour, organisational change, creativity, innovation, safety, leadership and decision making. • Ethics and legal frameworks of health systems

Placement Year – Putting employability at the heart of learning • Assessed and compulsory part of degree • Employability training: • Employers include: • The NHS Leadership Academy • GlaxoSmithKline • GE Healthcare • The Health Foundation • Academic Health Science Network. • All these employers will pay applicants • Students free to find other opportunities

Promoting student success through mentoring • Research Mentors: • Senior researchers and professors who are experts in the organisation and delivery of healthcare to develop student skills in understanding and carrying out research • Workplace Mentors: • Alumni of graduate schemes to support network development, work placement and future career decisions e.g. NHS graduate scheme, GSK graduate scheme, Cancer Research UK graduate scheme • Academic Tutor: • Experienced member of staff to guide in relation to academic and pastoral issues

Admissions Criteria • A Levels: AAB The following subjects would facilitate a successful application: Mathematics, English Literature, English Language, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, History, Geography, Economics, Psychology, Sociology, Philosophy, Languages, Statistics, Further Mathematics or Politics. Other subjects are also considered • GCSEs: A minimum of 7 GCSE including English at a minimum of grade B. Mathematics should be passed at a minimum of grade A. • Access: Science or social science based access course (40 distinctions at level 3). Different GCSE requirements for students over 21. • Selection process: UCAS application and interview; CRB self-disclosure.
