Documenting and Analyzing the VillageReach Model:Creating a Template for Extension of ServicesVillageReach Mozambique Internship Project VillageReach & Mozambique Group: Quan Zhou, Eric Bratton, Katherine A Hulpke, Jeremy Hyland, Justin Gale TC 498 Final Presentation, June 3rd, 2004
Purpose of the Handbook Serve as a resource for interns while in Mozambique • Background of the country and VR • Objectives of Internship • Methodology • Deliverables • Resources
Background • Mozambique • Still recovering from war, natural disasters and centuries of exploitation. • Desperately poor nation. • Not the best place to visit. • Village Reach Involvement in Mozambique • Pilot program in Cabo Delgado • Maintaining the Cold Chain • Sustainability through VidaGas • Expansion…
Purpose of the Project Transporting supplies to health clinics in remote parts of Mozambique is complicated by poor infrastructure, unreliable data and unskilled labor. • Finding a reliable means of gathering data; Institutionalizing knowledge in written form rather than being kept by a few key individuals. • Standardizing organizational procedures that are simple enough in order to efficiently achieve expansion throughout Cabo Delgado. • Designing and implementing a data collection system that is reliable and which the clinic workers will actually use.
Project Areas • Supply Chain: Provincial Central Warehouse to Clinic • Supply Chain: Clinic to Village • Supply Chain: National Warehouse to provincial Central Store • Satellite phones • Needle Pullers
Project Objectives • Document VillageReach’s current operations – supply chain and information chain. • Evaluate strengths and weaknesses of current supply chain and information chain systems and recommend improvements. • Document and analyze how radius of MOH services could be extended and how VR could support that extension. • Document supply chain and information chain upstream from provincial MOH warehouse to capital. • Document and analyze how best to use satellite phones. • Document and analyze feasibility of introducing needle-pullers.
Methodology • Information Flow / Data Collection • Ministry of Health interviews • Interviews with clinic workers • Upstream logistics flow • Computer Modeling
Project Timeline & Deliverables • Potential Project Deliverables: • Tools for evaluating current operations (survey, structured interview questions) • Report cataloguing current operations, strengths, and weaknesses • Service plan addressing extension/expansion recommendations • Report outlining upstream supply chain procedures and policies • Suggested protocols for satellite phones • Suggestions for introducing needle pullers (training plan, resource requirements) • Working timeline to be finalized next week as handbook is finalized.
In Conclusion • We hope this project will not only serve VillageReach and this class, but will also contribute to the nascent research field of humanitarian logistics and supply chain management.
