HASB 2013 Who: You and 55 other participants What: Building homes for the impoverished of an urban city Where: Mobile, AL When: Spring Break (March 15th– 23rd)
Why homelessness in an urban city? • Homelessness especially in urban cities can affect • Children’s education • Crime rates • Voting outcomes
Homelessness in Mobile 20.2% of individuals were below the poverty line in 2010 Alabama as of 2010 was ranked as the state with the 3rd highest poverty rate 6080 people homeless in Alabama in 2009, 2167 of those people were unsheltered
Mobile, AL According to Fox10, in Southwest Alabama, about 3-out-of-10 children aged 18 and under don't know where or when they're going to get another meal and 1 in 4 families are go hungry.
Who are we working with? Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Alabama
What will we be doing? Building homes Mostly construction work
Proposed Itinerary Friday Night: Depart UConn Saturday Night: Arrive in Mobile, AL Sunday: Introduction to Mobile and Group Bonding possible sight seeing. Mon-Thurs: Site-Work Friday: Site-Work, Evening exploring Mobile, Leave for UConn Saturday: Travel, Return to UConn
Costs Transportation, Program Fees, Food, Housing Projected Cost per Person: $450-$500 Through fundraising, grant, and possible USG funding these costs will be lowered. Prospectively $300
