  5. MAJOR BODY CAVITIES

  6. 1. Dorsal Body Cavity • contains & protects fragile nervous system organs. • Cranial Cavity – inside the skull; encloses the brain • Vertebral Cavity – inside the bony vertebral column; encloses the spinal cord

  7. 2. Ventral Body Cavity • Anterior and larger than the dorsal cavity • Thoracic Cavity – superior part • surrounded by ribs and muscles of chest • Contains heart and lungs • Pleural Cavities – 2 lateral cavities each holding a lung • Mediastinum – medial location that holds the heart (inside the pericardial cavity), esophagus, and trachea • Abdominopelvic Cavity – inferior part • Abdominal cavity – superior part; contains stomach, intestines, spleen, liver • Pelvic cavity – inferior part, contains the bladder, some reproductive organs, and the rectum

  8. Diaphragm • Dome shaped muscle that separates the thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities
