  1. For the teachers….. This is based on a board game format but I use it on the interactive whiteboard. It usually lasts the whole hour so is good for end of term / Friday afternoon lessons. I piloted it with my very clever year 7 but have since used it with more challenging groups and it has also been a success. It’s best with groups of around 20 students. Equipment for lesson – This presentation (see underneath for important information on macros), mini-whiteboards + pens & wipes for every student & dictionaries. Preparation 1 – Choose two teams and on Slide 3 write their names under the photos. In this game I used two pictures from clipart to represent Mr Terry and Miss Cigo (the two teachers who have robbed the bank). Underneath the captains/robbers, divide the rest of the class into two teams whose job it will be to answer questions in Spanish. The two teams should sit on opposite sides of class. 2 – Read the story on slide 4 and make sure the whole class understands what has happened. 3- Move onto slide 5 – this is the game board - explain the rules and procedures of the game. Hand out mini-whiteboards and pens to each student and ensure all pens work. Decide who goes first and begin. Macros For you to be able to move the 2 characters within slide show view, you need to enable macros. You should see this message when you open it. Click Enable Macros. This will enable a macro called ‘drag and drop’ on the 2 characters. Click once to lift, click again to drop it (don’t hold mouse down). You can see if it has worked by moving the grey box on this slide. If the sign didn’t appear, go to Tools/Macros and change security setting to medium before re-opening slide show.

  2. How to play… Once the preparations have been made, you can begin to play. The students’ object is to get their robber/teacher to the desert island first by moving along the board. The more Spanish they get right, the quicker they move ( actually this is only true for 90% of the game) Begin with team A and click on the blue square on Square 1 – the team then has 45 seconds to write as many examples of this category as they can on the whiteboards (you may want to give out dictionaries)….NOTE! 1 player may only write 1 answer (ignore any extra answers) + if 2 players have the same answer, count it as 1 correct response. This encourages teamwork and discourages over-reliance on 1 player. You can use the timer in top right corner. At the end of the 45 seconds – shout STOP! and count the number of correct answers you can see. Then look at the scores and move the character along according to how many points they have scored (for example 3 correct answers may mean forward 1 or 6 correct may mean forward 3). Sometimes you may have to move them backwards as well. Remember that the bull at the bottom of the question screen wil take you back to the board. Then team B have a turn so click on their picture on Square 1 ...NOTE! All squares have 2 pictures for 2 robbers with 2 different categories to avoid the second team gaining an unfair advantage by repeating a question. At the end of the 30 seconds – shout STOP! and count the number of correct answers you can see – move the second team along and repeat the process until a winner appears. There are two extra options which are ‘El globo fantástico’ and ‘La cárcel’ – these two extras lead to slide 6 and slide 15 respectively. Students may well discover ‘el globo’ is not so fantástico when they get near the end. *‘Las preguntas locas’ are an added twist where the students don’t know what their answers’ values are. You should be careful not to click twice on questions 3,7,12 & 16 UNTIL the 30 seconds is finished. You can then reveal the values which may sometimes mean that poorer answers score higher points (slide 3 being an extreme example of this).
