Uses of AS • It is a conjunction and introduces a clause, especially with verbs of speaking and knowing. • “As you know”, “as I said”, “as she expected”, “as I thought”… • Example:Do exactly as I say. • It is used in comparisons: as …as. • Example:He’s not as talented as his brother (is). • It is used to talk about a job or function. • Example:She works as a fashion model (She is a model). • Example:I’m using this tin as an ashtray Beni Fdez EOI Gijón
AS is also a linking word: • AS + IF = AS + THOUGH: It is used before a clause to say how something seems. • Example:Tom looks really awful. He looks as if he’s been up all night. • AS SOON AS = Immediately after. • AS LONG AS = If, on condition that. • AS = While. • AS = Because. • AS WELL= Too. • Fixed expressions: • As usual / as always • Regard … as. • Example:I regard her as my best friend. • . Uses of LIKE • It is a preposition and is used before a noun or pronoun with the meaning: “similar to, the same as”. • Example:He fought like a madman (but he’s not a madman) • Example:She’s a teacher, like me. • You can also say “like (sbody/sthing) doing something”. • Example:It sounds like a baby crying. • Sometimes LIKE = For example, such as. • Example:Some sports, like motor racing, can be dangerous. • In American English, and sometimes in informalspoken British English, LIKE can be used before a clause. • Example:Let’s do it, like we agreed.
