Reading Academically • What do you read? • Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested. Francis Bacon, 1625. • What do you understand by this quote? • Well, the purpose of reading differs from one individual to the other.
Why do we read? • To get an overview (background reading) • To locate specific information • To develop detailed and analytical understanding • Pleasure reading/free-range reading.
How do we read? • Fast reading • Scanning (very quick absorption of the content) • Skimming (running eyes down very quickly over the main features)
Slow Reading • Why? • Analyze and understand information • Evaluate and be critical • Remember the information you read • Follow instructions
