The Co-housing Revolution Co-housing allows for people’s desire for privacy and the desire to live community Based on a Danish model (began 1972, now 1% of population) 300 + Netherlands, 16+ USA, 16 in the UK, lots in development.
LILAC is built on three principles:: Low Impact Living – building low carbon homes that allow residents to have low impact lifestyles Affordable – meeting the challenge of a lack of affordable housing Community – building friendly, inclusive neighbourhoods
Low Impact Living • Behaviour • Shared meals • Allotments • Car pooling • Shared resources • Composting • Recycling Infrastructure • Good design • Natural materials • Renewable technology • Sustainable drainage • Limited car parking / encouraged bike use
Affordable Mutual Home Ownership Society Each house is allocated ‘equity units’ (EU) in the Society based on their income and house size You either buy your EU monthly over 20 years or buy them all upfront When you move out, you get most of the value of your EU back Linked to earnings not housing market

Wider Community Lilac set up as resource help / get involved in wider society, e.g.: social events (folk night, swap shop, fundraisers) Charitable work (Asylum seeker refuge) Local Resource (woodcraft folk, Green party, polling station, permaculture, music groups)
Who lives at Lilac? 20 homes (12 flats, 8 houses) 37 adults, 14 children Wide range of ages, lifestyles, professions and incomes. Anyone can join if: • Commit to core values • Meet minimum income • Existing members approve
2006 The first discussions 2006-2008 Lots more discussion! 2009 Lilac MHOS Ltd legally incorporated, official launch and first wave of members join. 2010 We appoint our architect, get grant, second wave of members join 2011 Planning permission April 2012 Work starts May 2013 We all move in!
