American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education Presented by AmyBeth Kramer, Erin Dowdell, Drew Leonardi, Lori Nuth
Challenge • Develop an online collaboration tool for use by its members • AACTE would like to offer its’ members a collaboration tool where members can: • learn from one another • post documents • share resources • discuss policies and procedures • exchange information in timely manner • receive peer feedback
Presentation Outline • Project Vision • Performance Analysis • Needs Analysis • Task Analysis • Design Recommendations • Flowchart and Storyboards • Formative Evaluation
Project Vision To recommend or design a collaboration tool for AACTE’s members. The collaboration should enable users to discuss policies and procedures, learn from one another and share resources.
Performance Analysis Methods • Performance Analysis consisted of: • Meeting with the Subject Matter Expert (SME) • Review of current information • Preliminary surveys • The purposes of our performance analysis were to: • Identify drivers and barriers • Gain an understanding • Review literature
Performance Analysis Results • AACTE goals for members • Feel comfortable collaborating • Communicate through e-mail, journals, newsletters, conferences and the annual summit • Have an online collaboration tool • Preliminary survey
Performance Analysis Results Literature Review • Key Points -Collaboration -Electronic communication -Computer mediated communication • Collaboration Online -Little research is available -Communities of Practice (CoP)
Needs Analysis Methods • Needs Analysis consisted of: • Subject Matter Expert • Literature review • Surveys • The purposes of our needs analysis were to: • Research literature • Members’ opinions • Collaboration tools • Collaboration practices
Needs Analysis Data Gathering • Purpose • Research Method • Participants • Instrument
Needs Analysis Data Summary • Collaboration with colleagues • Ideal collaboration with peers • Benefits to professional environment
Data Summary • Items listed as catalyst for collaboration with peers • Time/support for collaborating on a project (4) • Ability to share resources • Ability to co-write articles • Task organizer feature (2) • Ability review documents and provide feedback with a group • Technical support (4) • A mutually beneficial and interesting project to work on together • Easy to use tools • Peer willingness and enthusiasm for collaborating(2) • Asynchronous and synchronous features • A tool that works with endnote and checks for APA format accuracy • Access to complete journal articles on line • Face-to-face time • Easy to use tools • Wireless access • Laptops/up-to-date technology (3)
Needs Analysis ResultsLiterature Review Key Findings • Electronic communication • Collaboration • Computer mediated communication
Needs Analysis ResultsAudience Analysis • Members • Members’ roles • Affiliations • Education level • Attitudes • Technology skills
Needs Analysis ResultsEnvironmental Analysis • AACTE website • Access to training and development • Member communication
Needs Analysis ResultsTechnology Analysis • Collaborative media software • Several concurrent users can create and manage information in a website • Web based or run on desktop systems • Synchronous or asynchronous • Publicly accessible content
Needs Analysis Results Technology Analysis Three Levels of Communication: • Electronic communication tools • Electronic conferencing tools • Collaborative management tools
Needs Analysis ResultsTechnology Analysis • Web Collaboration Software • Hosted Web Collaboration Environments • Online Classrooms & E-Learning Software
Needs Analysis Results Current Conditions • Subject Matter Expert • AACTE website review
Needs Analysis Results Optimal Conditions • Meet members’ needs • Innovative progress • Communication through the website • Technical assistance from AACTE staff • Shared objectives • Open communication • Participants feel valued
Needs Analysis Results Discrepancies • Current use of the website and want for innovative communication • Inability to effectively learn from one another • Collaborative environment would resolve the discrepancies
Task AnalysisActivity System • Member website • Special Study Groups • Collaboration Informal methods used • Collaboration Formal methods used
Task AnalysisContext • Members requested a method to share resources • AACTE leaders would like to entice new members and meet their current members needs • Technology initiatives
Task AnalysisContext • AACTE member motivation • Limitations
Task AnalysisStructure • Collaboration tool components will be interrelated • Multiple components and combination of features • Members choose how the tool is used
Objectives The members will: • Discuss policies, procedures and hot topics in education by accessing a secure online discussion area • Work collaboratively on research projects with other members by searching, posting, retrieving, and reviewing posted documents, as well as providing peer feedback in a collaborative tool to co-write journal articles, presentations or other research projects
Objectives continued • The members will: • Seek assistance through the use of a tutorial, facilitators of discussions, and technical help when necessary • Participate in synchronous collaboration by utilizing the live discussion feature • Participate in asynchronous collaboration through the use of threaded discussions and e-mail
Design Recommendations • Implement a collaboration software tool
Formative Evaluation • Expert Review • Before development • Field Tests • Select group of users • Completed before implementation of tool • Ongoing Evaluation • After full implementation of tool • Provide suggestions for improvement
