  3. New(er) technologies • Cloud computing • Potential for SMEs and developing countries • Security remains a concern • Mobile • No longer phones - light computers • Can extend trade to persons (B2C/G2C) • APIs & Apps • Interface standards (pull communication) • Grid computing • … and much more

  4. Why change (or not) • Must be user driven • Technology for technology’s sake fails • But the potentials of new technology must be understood by the users • If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said ‘faster horses.’ • Henry Ford

  5. Why change (or not) • Certain maturity required in our domain • Reliability • Cost • Knowledge • If it ain’t broken… • Solving the same business problem better is not enough • UN/EDIFACT is still increasing more than XML in many domains

  6. UN/CEFACT groups’ view • ITP: Possible projects: • Mobile Business • RFID guidance • Customs • Use of digital signatures in eCert • Travel and Tourism • Exploring use of cloud computing • Agriculture • Included pull information exchange for traceability

Discussion points • Do we need a R&D function? • The role of Methodology & Technology PDA • The role of sector and national development • Collaboration with external organisations • How do we capture user requirements? • How do we bridge existing Standards & Recommendations with new technology? • How do we “capacity-build” ourselves and our users?
