About this session • Trying to emphasize teaching methods, things you can do • Using Turning Point as the system • Other good systems exist as well • Might look different, but would do similar things • I just started using these in January • I honestly believe these are powerful and easy, very useful and helpful with MANY things
Terminology • SRS – Student Response Systems • PRS – Personal Response Systems • “Voters, Clickers, etc…” • Anything else?
Technique 1 – Gathering Background Information • Prior to starting a course, unit, lesson, etc… you could poll the students as a means to get to know the students, build relationships, get a feel for prior knowledge, previous courses, etc…
How long have you been teaching/in the field of education? • 0-5 years • 6-10 years • 11-15 years • 16-20 years • 21 + 30
Which school district are you employed in? • D-G-F • Fargo • Moorhead • West Fargo • Other 30
Which college to you attend for your undergraduate degree? • MSUM • UND • NDSU • Valley City • Mayville • Concordia • Jamestown • U-Mary • Dickinson State • Other 30
Technique #2 – Goal Setting, Planning Instruction, Setting Classroom Norms • At the start of a course, unit, lesson, project, etc… you could poll students to get feedback on a variety of topics
Would you like a fairly easy way to assess student learning and check for understanding? • Yes • Yes • Yes • No (leave right now!) 30
Would you like a fairly simple way to gather data regarding what your students know? • Of course • Yes please • Absolutely • All of the above 30
Would you like real time data which shows how your students are performing on an assessment? • No • Why would I want that? • Probably not • Of course 30
Would you like something that would grade student's assessments for you, and give the students instant feedback for how they are doing? • Maybe • Possibly • Potentially • Yep 30
Technique #3 – Starters/Closers – Check for Understanding • Align the questions for the start of class today to the objectives from yesterday, look for trends, reteach if necessary
Of the following topics from yesterdays (or todays) discussion on research methods, which do you understand the most? • Validity • Reliability • Bias • Dependent vs. Independent Variable • Control vs. Experimental Group 30
Of the following topics from yesterdays (or todays) discussion on research methods, which do you understand the least? • Validity • Reliability • Bias • Dependent vs. Independent Variable • Control vs. Experimental Group 30
Technique #4 – Assess for Understanding while teaching • At the end of class, in the middle of class, at the start of class, anytime…include questions to assess if students are “getting” what you are discussing • Useful to assess student learning, provides an incentive for students to focus more
In this video clip (consistent with the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis), the agents argue that they know more about saving based on • How long they have been employed • Their relationships with the customers • How professionally they are dressed • The number of words they have for money 30
Technique #5 – Polling the class when you want to know but don’t, or are concerned about validity • Example – Youth Risk Behavior Survey, student polling (drug use, risky behavior) • Voting – Did you vote? Who for, who would you vote for if you could vote? • Hot-button issues (abortion, same-sex marriage, etc…) • Allows introverts to get involved, passionate people to not totally dominate a discussion
What percentage of your friends do you know have used tobacco products? • Less than 10 • 11-20 • 21-30 • 31-40 • 41-50 • 51-60 • 61-70 • 71-80 • 81-90 • 91+ 30
Technique #6 – Framing the debate • Especially useful for debated positions • Allows students to pick an option, see what their peers think, response accordingly. • Can be used to kick off a different activity, project, discussion
Which Allied country do you believe played the strongest role in helping the Allies win WW2? • USSR • USA • England • France 30
Technique #7 – Competition • Some students thrive on competition • Clickers allow for many ways to utilize this… • You can pick random team assignments • Examples I have used… • Juniors vs. Seniors; Boys/Girls; Athletic Shoes vs. Everything else; Shirt Color; Prom – Cool or Overrated; etc… • Varies the teams, easy to assign
Birthdays • Odd date (e.g. 1st, 13th, 23rd) • Even date (e.g. 2nd, 16th, 24th)

Billboard's top song of 2012 • Gotye "Somebody That I Used to Know" • Carly Rae Jepsen "Call Me Maybe" • Adele "Rolling in the Deep" • LMFAO "Party Rock Anthem" 30
Technique #8 – Use paper tests, self paced assessments • Allows students to work at their own pace • Allows you to see real time how they are doing • Corrects the assessment automatically for you • Some grading software allows automatic integration (this would be awesome, working on it for PowerSchool, not sure on others)… • Will do this after some feedback…
Technique #9 – Gather feedback • After doing a project, test, lesson, session, etc… allows you to get constructive criticism • Gives you more valid data since it can be anonymous
