About this session • Trying to emphasize teaching methods, things you can do • Using Turning Point as the system • Other good systems exist as well • Might look different, but would do similar things • I just started using these in January • I honestly believe these are powerful and easy, very useful and helpful with MANY things

  3. Terminology • SRS – Student Response Systems • PRS – Personal Response Systems • “Voters, Clickers, etc…” • Anything else?

  4. Technique 1 – Gathering Background Information • Prior to starting a course, unit, lesson, etc… you could poll the students as a means to get to know the students, build relationships, get a feel for prior knowledge, previous courses, etc…

  8. Technique #2 – Goal Setting, Planning Instruction, Setting Classroom Norms • At the start of a course, unit, lesson, project, etc… you could poll students to get feedback on a variety of topics

  13. Technique #3 – Starters/Closers – Check for Understanding • Align the questions for the start of class today to the objectives from yesterday, look for trends, reteach if necessary

Technique #4 – Assess for Understanding while teaching • At the end of class, in the middle of class, at the start of class, anytime…include questions to assess if students are “getting” what you are discussing • Useful to assess student learning, provides an incentive for students to focus more

Technique #5 – Polling the class when you want to know but don’t, or are concerned about validity • Example – Youth Risk Behavior Survey, student polling (drug use, risky behavior) • Voting – Did you vote? Who for, who would you vote for if you could vote? • Hot-button issues (abortion, same-sex marriage, etc…) • Allows introverts to get involved, passionate people to not totally dominate a discussion

  21. Technique #6 – Framing the debate • Especially useful for debated positions • Allows students to pick an option, see what their peers think, response accordingly. • Can be used to kick off a different activity, project, discussion

Technique #7 – Competition • Some students thrive on competition • Clickers allow for many ways to utilize this… • You can pick random team assignments • Examples I have used… • Juniors vs. Seniors; Boys/Girls; Athletic Shoes vs. Everything else; Shirt Color; Prom – Cool or Overrated; etc… • Varies the teams, easy to assign

Technique #8 – Use paper tests, self paced assessments • Allows students to work at their own pace • Allows you to see real time how they are doing • Corrects the assessment automatically for you • Some grading software allows automatic integration (this would be awesome, working on it for PowerSchool, not sure on others)… • Will do this after some feedback…

  41. Technique #9 – Gather feedback • After doing a project, test, lesson, session, etc… allows you to get constructive criticism • Gives you more valid data since it can be anonymous
