Using Clickers in the Classroom Nicole Doyle Professor, School of Justice and Emergency Services
Your Experience With Clickers • Use them all the time • Use them once in a while • Have never used them but would like to try • Have no intention of using them
I have students in my class who rarely/never participate. • Agree strongly • Agree • Disagree • Disagree strongly
I would like honest feedback from students on whether they “get it” or not for certain difficult topics. • Agree strongly • Agree • Disagree • Disagree strongly
Clickers – Why? • Quiet students versus more active ones • Apathy/boredom with certain topics/tasks • Lack of feedback from larger classes
Clickers • Helps you know your audience • Encourages full class participation • See when some are “fading”! • Provides anonymity to individual students • Provides time to complete tasks for everyone • gauge when a task is done • Can provide self-assessment • Valuable data once the presentation is done • transfers back to teaching • Engages students • something new/tactile
Getting Started With Clickers • Install the Turning Point software • Can be found on the I: drive in the Centre for Academic and Faculty Enrichment folder • Reserve the clickers for your class day/time • Media Services • Launch and Get Started
Steps to Create a Clicker Presentation • Launch Turning Point • Insert slide • Type question • Type answers • Indicate which is the right answer if you wish • Insert a correct answer indicator if you wish
Running the Presentation • Insert the USB Receiver • Launch Turning Point • Open your presentation • Reset ALL SLIDES • Begin • First click gives the question/responses (wait for responses) • Second click closes the polling and creates the chart • Third click will show the correct answer if you’ve inserted a correct answer indicator • Save changes at the end of the presentation to preserve the charts that you created!
By the end of this school year, my experience with clickers will be... • Use them all the time • Use them once in a while • Tried them for the first time! • Still want to try them, but didn’t get a chance • Have no intention of using them.
Summary • Try it! • Lots of applications • Help is available • Short video clips with instructions as we saw in the presentation today
