  1. Unit 3, Week 3 Multi-Step Equations

  2. Do Now – (20/2), (11 x 2) • Pick up your guided notes and tracker and respond to the following SILENTLY & INDEPENDENTLY: • Solve for c. -10 + ½c = 30 • Solve for x. (4/x) – 20 = 40

  3. Homework / Make Up Work Reminders • STILL MISSING! – letter issued with report cards & Stanford Math letters! • MISSING WORK! – Post along the back wall. All work is deducted 10% after every day it is late. After 10 days, the work can no longer be turned in. Check now so it doesn’t affect your grade later and you can’t make it up! • RETAKING QUIZZES! – If all your homework is not turned in for the topics covered on the quiz, you MAY NOT retake a quiz. Prepare yourself adequately and you will more than likely not need to retake a quiz!

  11. Week Agenda • Monday – Equations in fraction form – the ‘aquaintances’ • Tuesday – Equations with distributing in fraction form – the ‘enemies’ • Wednesday – Equations with Combining Like Terms • Thursday – Equations with Combining Like Terms • Friday – Quiz over Monday – Thursday’s topics

  12. Today’s Objective • SWBAT solve equations in fraction form by getting rid of the acquaintances.

  13. Today’s Agenda • Do Now – 5 minutes • Homework/Make-Up Work Reminders – 1 minute • Shout Outs – 2 minutes • Tracking – 4 minutes • Week Agenda – 1 minute • Equations with Fractions INM – 8 minutes • GP – 10 minutes • IP – 12 minutes • Exit Ticket – 5 minutes

  14. With Multi-Step Equations it can be hard to know where to start…. pretend it’s a party! • You are the host - a.k.a. ‘X’ • In what order do people leave a party • Enemies (get rid of them to avoid trouble) – TOMORRROW! • Acquaintances (after mingling with everyone, they usually leave early)] • Friends (they hang out with the host a little longer) • Family (if attending, they will stay to the end to help clean)

  15. Who is who?Consider our one-step equations FAMILY….right beside you…and only you… until the end! 2x = 8 x +3 = 15 x – 5 = 20 FRIENDS….they are close to you…they stay longer than some people, but not as long as family

  16. Who are the acquaintances? ACQUAINTANCE – Because this number mingles with all other many parts of the equation instead of giving most of its attention to the host (x), it is not a friend…it is an acquaintance.

  17. Identify all the Party-goers FRIEND FAMILY ACQUAINTANCE

  18. The equal sign is the door…who goes out the door first? EXAMPLE 1: The work: ACQUAINTANCE – multiply each side of the equation by 3. The result: We still have company... lets continue….

  19. Who is next to leave? Friends – add 5 to each side. The work: The result: All that is left is family…a familiar one-step equation.

  20. Clean up the party with a family member! The work: Family – divide each side by 2 The result: Don’t forget to check your work with Order of Operations!

  21. REMEMBER - FOLLOW THE STEPS TO CLEAN UP THE PARTY! • Steps: • Identify the party-goers • Eliminate party-goers in order • Enemies • Acquaintances • Friends • Family • Get x (the host) alone • Check your solution

  22. Multi-Step Equations • Watch as I walk through another example. • Example 2: • Steps: • Identify the party-goers • Eliminate party-goers in order • Get x (the host) alone • Check your solution

  23. Multi-Step Equations • Watch as I walk through one more example. • Example 3: • Steps: • Identify the party-goers • Eliminate party-goers in order • Get x (the host) alone • Check your solution

  33. Exit Ticket Each of you will complete your exit ticket on a note card. You will complete the exit ticket in 5 minutes and it must be turned in before you can exit the classroom. You must work SILENTLY and INDEPENDENTLY. HOMEWORK – Worksheet

  34. Exit Ticket • HOMEWORK – Worksheet

  35. Do Now – (100/10), (52 – 2) • Please respond to the following on your guides notes SILENTLY & INDEPENDENTLY: • Solve for x. • Solve for x.

  36. Today’s Agenda • SWBAT solve a multi-step equation by getting rid of the enemies.

  39. Its party time!Do you know who is in your home? Family HOST Friend Enemy The Door! Acquaintance See if you can ID the enemy, the friend, the acquaintance, a family member, the host and the door!

  40. Enemies can ruin the entire party…get rid of them first! Example 1 Its easy to spot an enemy…they affect everything! To solve, multiply each side by the reciprocal( the fraction flipped) The work: Try to complete the problem from here….the answer is: The result: 21
