The award will be presented at the International Association for K-12 Online Learning conference in New Orleans.

  17. Alternative Education Special Education Is Alternative Education an appropriate placement? IEP to recommend placement “a referral for alternative education will be considered.” the IEP does not determine placement in alternative education. If approved for alternative education a transition IEP must be held. The site is responsible for completing the annual and triennial IEPS prior to enrollment in alternative education.

Alternative Education Options • Mount Toro High School • Criteria for enrollment: 16 years old minimum • Capacity: 248 maximum (class size: 21 – 23) • Graduation credit requirement: 190 (no P.E., 1 year Foreign Language or Art) • Student schedule: 5 hours, 8:30 a.m. – 2:16 p.m. • Student enrolled in 5 courses; can potentially earn 100 credits annually. • Instructional method: direct instruction • Grading Cycles: 8 grading cycles 4-5 weeks long; 2-3 credits in each class • CAL-SAFE Teen Parent Program: 20 babies • Special Education: 26 students; push-in model • English Learners: generally minimum of CELDT 3 level • Intake: new students enrolled at the start of each grading cycle; student and parent must attend orientation • Students may petition to return to their home school at the end of each semester.

Mount Toro High School Credit Requirements The following are the required courses for graduation: English 40 credits Math 30 credits Life Science 10 credits Physical Science 10 credits World History 10 credits US History 10 credits Government 15 credits Economics 15 credits Vocational Education 10 credits Art or Foreign Language. 10 credits Health 10 credits Electives 40 credits TOTAL 190 credits Physical Education (P.E.) is not required for graduation from Mount Toro High School. Previously earned P. E. credits will count toward the required number of elective credits.

Teen parents need TB test (PPD) within current school year—done annually. • Infants/toddlers need a physician’s report and current immunization record. • Student is enrolled in one period of teen parenting class and one period in the child care center.

Alternative Education Options • Carr Lake Community Day School • Two schools/classrooms: High School & Middle School • Criteria for enrollment (in priority order) • Board placement of expelled student • MCOE return of expelled student to district (RTD) • Probation referral • Site referral: intervention for students with behavioral issues • Capacity: 20 students maximum per class: HS: 16 MS: 15 • Student schedule: MS: 8:15 a.m. – 3:00 HS: 8:30 – 3:15 • Enrollment: one semester to one year; return to home school • Instructional method: Direct instruction of core subjects • Special Education: Case Carrier shared with EPS • Site referrals submitted to alt. ed. clerk—placement is ongoing with 2-3 spots reserved for expulsion placements
