The Hypotenuse of a right triangle is irrational

The Hypotenuse of a right triangle is irrational. Can you find an example of a right triangle where this is ALWAYS, SOMETIMES, or NEVER TRUE? Work with you partner on your whiteboard to see if you can come up with an example for each.

  1. The Hypotenuse of a right triangle is irrational Can you find an example of a right triangle where this is ALWAYS, SOMETIMES, or NEVER TRUE? Work with you partner on your whiteboard to see if you can come up with an example for each. HINT: Given 2 legs of a right triangle use Pythagorean theorem to find the hypotenuse.

  2. What did you need to do to show that the statement was sometimes true? • To justify your answers to the statements following you must first try out examples of different numbers until you form a conjecture (decide on what you think is correct) of always, sometimes, or never true. • Once you have decided, write your examples, your conjecture, and your reason for your conjecture on your white board. • Click in your team’s response in your clickers.

  3. Instructions for Always, Sometimes or Never True • Read the statement • Try out different numbers. • Write your examples on your own paper. • 2. Conjecture: decide whether you think each statement is always, sometimes or never true. • Always true: explain why on your paper. • Sometimes true: write an example for which it is true and an example for which it is false. • Never true: explain why on your paper.

  4. The sum of a rationalnumber and an irrationalnumber is irrational. • Always true • Sometimes true • Never true [Default] [MC Any] [MC All]

  5. The circumference of a circle is irrational . • Always true • Sometimes true • Never true [Default] [MC Any] [MC All]

  6. The product of two rational numbers is a rational number. • Always true • Sometimes true • Never true [Default] [MC Any] [MC All]

  7. The sum of two irrationalnumbers is irrational. • Always true • Sometimes true • Never true [Default] [MC Any] [MC All]

  8. The product of two irrationalnumbers is irrational. • Always true • Sometimes true • Never true [Default] [MC Any] [MC All]

  9. With your team discuss your answers to Rational or Irrational worksheet. • HW – Rational or Irrational? (revisited) worksheet. • Be sure to justify all conjectures with examples or non-examples.
