  1. The Son of David, King of Israel: Christ and David / The David StoriesPOWERPOINT 8B

  2. The Period of the Judges Who were the “judges” and when did they rule Israel? • As the people of Israel settled in the promised land, they were led by “judges” – before the time of kings; • “judges” were “charismatic” leaders moved by Lord, moved by spirit, not chosen by predetermined law or heredity; • there was not yet an established hereditary monarchy, and Israel did not yet have a “king”; • The Biblical history generally depicts this form of leadership as better, preferring judges to kings, since judges are more dependent on the Lord’s assistance.

  3. GIDEON: the period of Judges How do judges exert leadership in period of judges, using Gideonas an example (Judges 6:11-18, 33-40)? • Like a prophet, Gideon first hears God calling, but feels unworthy and tests to make sure it is truly the Lord’s will for him (no “automatic” authority like a king would have) • Gideon then summons the tribes as allies to council and awaits Lord’s word before proceeding (cannot command them like a king) • Gideon must justify his plans as from God, within framework of his faith(not just because of his political position) • Gideon needs to generate a shared commitment of the individual tribes (cannot control them)

  4. “Raiders”: Representation of the Ark

  5. The Ark – power of the Judges Give an example of the role of the Ark of the Covenant as the “center of power” in the time of the judges. (The ark and Dagon: 1 Samuel 5) • The Ark of the Covenant was a box containing “the presence of God,” particularly in the tablets of the Ten Commandments; • It represented the “center of power” for the people of Israel – a religious, spiritual center and focus of authority; • This center is not located in one place, like the later Temple, but moves around with the people; • When the power of the Lord is matched against the power of the gods of the neighbors of Israel • the power is the LORD’S; Israel must rely only on Him. • “Dagon”, god of the Philistines, is no match at all: destroyed mysteriously • It is not by human strength, but by the Lord’s intervention that Israel may succeed • Kingship is no guarantee of success – only the Lord is.

  6. Better not to have a king? According to Samuel, why does God prefer that Israel not choose a king? (see 1 Samuel 8) • They should not be like other nations • (they shouldn’t want to be like the others) • They should consider the Lord himself as their king • (they tend to forget about that and think themselves strong) • They will endure a long list of abuses and problems from kings, as given by Samuel • (They don’t seem to realize or care about that, even with a warning) • Send your sons to his wars; • Take over your fields for himself; • Use you daughters for his purposes; • Take your servants, cattle; • Make you slaves!
