General Laboratory Safety • Know the locations of laboratory safety features including: • Fire extinguishers • Fire blankets • Emergency exits • Safety Shower • Eyewash Station • Fume hoods
General Laboratory Safety • When using Bunsen Burners in the laboratory, never lean over or around flame • Keep materials close-by and your work station organized • Do not leave personal items in active lab space (backpacks, laptops, etc) • Store these items on side benches and cabinets
Chemical Hygiene • Before leaving the laboratory, wash hands thoroughly with antimicrobial soap • DO NOT EAT, DRINK, CHEW GUM, OR APPLY COSMETICS IN THE LABORATORY • If a lab break is permitted, have a snack & discard in trash bins OUTSIDE of the laboratory
Chemical Handling • Label all working solutions & never use unlabeled chemicals • Use funnels to transfer chemicals & never pour solution back into a stock container • Never mix chemicals unless instructed to do so • Take extra care & follow instructions when handling hazardous chemicals (flammable, corrosive, toxic, reactive)
Chemical Waste • Dispose of all chemical waste as instructed • If waste container is unlabeled, DO NOT USE IT • Do not discard of any chemical waste products in trash or drains • Do not mix chemical waste
Dissections • While conducting dissections in lab, use nitrile gloves & dress appropriately • Do not use dull cutting tools • Place all specimen waste in the containers provided , do not discard of any material in the trash or drains
Broken Glass • If glass breaks during a laboratory, use the dustpan & broom provided to clean it up • Discard of broken glass (ONLY) in glass receptacle provided in the lab • Small shards can be picked up with a wet paper towel & discarded in glass bin • Be careful and notify Lab Tech on duty for assistance
Personal Protective Equipment • You may need gloves, splash-resistant goggles, and/or a lab coat to participate in certain labs • Follow directions from Instructor and Lab Manual • You will be asked to leave lab if you’re not dressed appropriately • Absolutely no open-toed shoes are permitted in lab • No short shorts or skirts • Tie back long hair & remove hanging jewelry
No Open-Toed Shoes Hazards in a laboratory include chemicals, heavy equipment & sharps so cover your feet with hard-top shoes or sneakers…no Crocs!
In Case of Emergency • In the event of an emergency or mandatory evacuation, follow directions from your Instructor, Lab Tech on duty and/or Public Safety • Do not attempt to clean a chemical spill or aid an injured person without notifying your Instructor • If you have a medical condition that may interfere with your participation in this course, notify your Laboratory Instructor immediately
