  3. Definition of Terms (Yin and Yang Aspects) • Hard and Soft Technique • How martial artist apply martial arts in terms of force • Internal and External • How to practice the respective martial arts • Disclaimer: • No martial art is purely hard, soft, internal, external

  4. Hard Technique • “ying” 硬 • “force meets force” • Use of effective blocking, parrying, and counter-punching

  5. Soft Technique • “rou”柔 • “use attacker’s force against him/her” • “lead the attacker to a disadvantageous position for him/her” • Effective use of grappling, throws, joint manipulation, even yielding

  6. External View • 外家 “waijia” – external family • Focus on applying the martial art as fast, explosive, and powerful • To develop physical strength and agility • Uses a lot of qigong aspects to develop muscular power, aerial capabilities, and speed

  7. Internal View • 內家 “neijia” – internal family • Focus on the mental aspect of the martial art • Awareness of spirit, qi (breathing and relaxation) • More on stretching and moves are done in a slower pace

  8. Tai chi Quan • 太極拳 – Supreme Ultimate Fist • Chinese Martial Art • Internal • Soft technique • “injuries to a certain level will be attained if both fighters use brute force against each other”

  9. Tai chi Quan (Qigong) • Breathing exercises • Eight Part Brocade • Pushing hands

  10. Aikido • 合気道 – The Way of Harmonious Spirit • Japanese Martial Arts • Internal • Focus on relaxation, flexibility, endurance; less emphasis on strength • Soft technique • Emphasis on throws and joint locks; usually a defensive martial art

  11. Aikido (training) • Learning how to roll and fall down • Relaxation • Even under the stress of dangerous situations • Attack should be met with confidence and directness • Taninzudori/Taninzugake • Learning to defend against multiple attackers

  12. Taekwondo • 태권도 – the way of the foot and the fist • Korean Martial art • External • Emphasizes on physical aspect • “the leg is the longest and strongest weapon a man has” • Hard Technique • A lot of striking with the legs and fists; effective blocking as well

  13. Taekwondo (training) • Learning the kicks buy hitting kick pads • Sparring • Breaking • Wooden boards either through power, speed, technique • Also teaches ethical justice, respect, discipline, etiquette, and self-confidence

  14. Judo • 柔道 – the gentle way • Japanese Martial Art • Internal • Ability to defend self despite being underweight and overpowered • Soft technique • Use of tripping, dodging, adaptation to opponent’s movements

  15. Judo (training) • Learning how to fall down and rolling • Focuses on throwing and ground work (grappling) • Not much emphasis on striking (punching/kicking)
