Introduction to Semantic Web by Constantine Pafitis Srinivasan Shanmugam Reviewed by Dr. Tao Lixin 5/21/2012
Why Semantic Web? • Flaws of Traditional Web • The Internet is primarily display oriented(pages) • Search engines cannot distinguish between sites • Search engines are forced to perform ‘keyword’ matches • No intelligence(HTML Tags and text for browser display only) • Laborious– multiple searches ( no integration) • Simple keyword matching • Web data mining applications highly specialized and expensive • Mining agents have no intelligence capability • In Traditional Web components are created equal
How to Upgrade the Traditional Web to Semantic Web? • Searching - Results need to be more relevant • Integration - More Automated • Web mining - Less Expensive • The Internet is constructed in such a way that its documents only contain enough information for the computers to present them, not understand them
Semantic Web by Tim Berners-Lee “The Semantic Web is an extension of the current web in which information is given well-defined meaning, better enabling computers and people to work in cooperation.” --Tim Berners-Lee, James Hendler, Ora Lassila Can you tell us about Semantic Web Tim? What is Semantic Web? • Intelligent Search - Publishing relevant results • Automated Integration - Minimizing the human intervention to find the appropriate data • Understand data Mining - Visiting all the related sites to collect specific information • Adding semantics to the web document • Expressed as Structured Information • Can be read and understood by machines • Instruct the machine about how to display
Concepts of the Sematic Web • Including the building blocks • Key components in the core technologies • Relationships among these components
Building blocks and Key concpetof the Sematic Web • Indexation Process - Preparing a huge index table for its potential users • Smart Agent or Crawler - Understand the structured data, Conduct intelligent actions and Make educate decisions • Search Process - Ranks/Depth-first search/breadth- first search • Meta Data - “Data about Data”
