Phase III clinical drug trials • Preclinical: animal • Phase I: small group of healthy humans kept in close watch • Phase II: slightly larger group of healthy humans used mainly to assess dosing and efficacy • Phase III: PTs that actually have the designated disease • Phase IV: drug is allowed to be sold, but closely monitored • Runs very much like a doctor’s office

  3. Many different studies currently taking place • Diabetes • Peripheral Neuropathy • Weight Loss • Erectile Dysfunction • Arthritis • Lower Back Pain • Birth Control • Rosacea • Onychomichosis (Toe nail fungus) • Eli Lilly, Merck, Pfizer, Teva, Warner-Chillcott, Daichi-Sankyo, Intendis, etc.

  4. My Duties • Sit in on PT visits • Make charts/file • Help keep PT folders organized • Learn lab procedures • Draw blood • Organize and account for controlled substances • Run front office/run errands • Help with advertising • Ask lots of questions!

  5. Overall Experience PROS CONS Busy work! Hit a point where wasn’t much more to learn Not what I expected Not relevant to major • Taught me a great deal about the drug industry • Helped choosing my career path • Enjoyed lab work and learning to draw blood • Gained experience in research and pharmaceuticals • The people were fun to work with • Flexible with hours • Experience in a professional environment
