Kyle Mitchell presents: “My idea” became a bill and then a law through the three branches of government! To Mr. C. Lemoine
My Proposed Idea…. “Children should not ride bikes in the street without an adult”. “It’s too dangerous”!!!!
How does my idea become a bill?? Well, let me explain! I contacted my local representative. I choose to contact Representative Edward “Ted” James. He likes kids in the community to be safe.
The “BIG TALK”! I had to explain my Idea to Rep. Edward “Ted” James and he had to decide if my idea was important enough to become a bill. If he believes it’s important he would say: “Ok, let’s make it a bill”. But if not, my idea would….
The “BIG TALK”…… Rep. James thought my was perfect to make into a BILL! “IDEA” 2nd So..he shared it in the legislative branch of government!
The Legislative Branch??? Tell me more! • The legislative branch of government is responsible for making laws. • It is made up of the House of Representatives and The Senate. • Representatives and Senators are elected by the people. • The legislative branch of government meets in the State Capital.
My idea is now a bill! 3rd The committee discussed that children should only ride on side walks with a helmet! What a great idea! After the bill was shared in the legislature, it had to go to the committee for changes. They changed or edited the bill.
Back to Rep. Ted James 4th After the bill left the committee…Rep. James shared the edited bill again with the representatives and the senate.
“The Big Debate” 5th Members of the House of Rep. and the Senate debated the Bill. Some said no Helmets are needed. Others said YES, ALL KIDS NEED HELMETS to stay safe!
“The Big Debate” is over NOW IT’S TIME TO VOTE ON THE BILL! 6th Kids from everywhere including me wanted to see if this bill would pass!!! I knew if it did not kids would not be safe and the bill would….
7th HOW DOES VOTING WORK?? 8th First, It goes to the House of representatives for voting. If it passes… Second, it goes to The Senate for voting. If it passes…. If it does not pass it DIES!
The Judicial Branch is needed to help leaders understand the law better. 9th The Judicial Branch of government decides if laws are fair or not. The Supreme Court Justices are elected by the people and can serve a 10 year term. The Supreme court decides how disagreements about laws should be settled.
It then goes to the Executive Branch of Government The executive branch is made up of the Governor, the lieutenant Governor the Attorney General, the Secretary of the State, and the State Treasurer. The governor meets the leaders in the state capital. They are responsible for carrying out the law.
10th If the bill passes… It goes to the Governor for review! If he agrees with the bill he can …. Pass it! And if not he can…
MY Bill PASSED!! The governor passed the bill!! I’m so happy! Mayor Kip Holden came to congratulate me because my idea became a law!
Well…. Not really….. It was all just a very interesting, funny, exciting, educated, joyful and creative DREAM!
