DIEGO VELÁZQUEZ 1599-1660 • Later appointed pintor real (commissioned by the King Felipe IV) • Baroque painter, known for his realism and rich colors, light and shadow and his ability to place people in space. • One of his famous paintings: Las Meninas (the Maids of honor), three dimensional. • On the left Velázquez faces a canvas and looks at his subjects, in the audience, el Rey Felipe IV and la Reina Mariana de Austria, reflected in the mirror in the back of the painting. In the forefront, the Infanta is being attended by her maids of honor, while a dwarf looks on. The dog lays tranquil in the forefront. Someone is seen leaving the scene through a back door with a last look at the scene. • Another pintura famosa: The Surrender of Breda, the Dutch Commander surrenders the key to the city to the Spanish Commander (notice the lances to suggest a large army)
