Geography • In ancient times there was no 1 country called Greece. • There were a bunch of Greek speaking communities around the Mediterranean Sea. • Was on the coasts of 2 continents Europe & Asia • Travelers & traders exchanged goods, ideas & customs.
Modern Greece is a Peninsula. • An • ~2000 yrs ago Greek speaking people entered the islands from the north to live on the mainland of Greece. • Mainland Greece is divided by mountain ranges. • Between these ranges are narrow valleys and small plain.
Farming • Valley’s were good for raising sheep & goats but too steep for farming. • Less than 1% of land was goof for farming • Only fertile land was in lowland valleys & plains. • This is where people settled.
Communities • Mountains isolated the communities from each other so they became fiercely independent. • They never attempted to unit under a single government. • The communities were often at war with each other.
