  1. Schizophrenia / Nick Blinko

  2. Nick Blinko A British musician, lyricist, and artist best known as the lead singer, lyricist and guitar player for the British band Rudimentary Peni. He is also known for being an “outsider” artist who creates all the drawings used by the band for its artwork.

  3. Blinko draws intensely dense and detailed compositions of faces, figures and obsessive patterns, which at times also incorporate fragmented phrases. Diagnosed as suffering from Schizoaffective Disorder, and in the past hospitalized, Blinko creates his pictures when not taking therapeutic medication that adversely affects his ability to work. His art conjures a nightmarish, anxiety-ridden world where inner demons might be exorcised through repetitive graphic marks. Out of thousands of tiny flecks and dashes emerge elaborate visions of skeletons, mysterious symbols and religious figures.

  4. Schizoaffective Disorder • A mental disorder characterized by recurring abnormal mood and psychotic components. The mood component may be elevated or depressed (bipolar), or simultaneously elevated and depressed (mixed episode), and these abnormal mood components alternate with, or occur together with, psychotic symptoms.

  5. Diagnosis Affects Most commonly affects cognition and emotion. Perceptual disturbances (hallucinations) and/or disordered thought processes, including delusions and disorganized speech and thinking, occur in conjunctions with significant social and occupational dysfunction. Symptoms usually begin in early adulthood. • For a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder to be valid, according to current DSM criteria, there must be a period of at least two weeks of psychosis without mood disorder, and these symptoms cannot be due to medications, substance use or another medical condition.

  6. Management Few medications are approved specifically for use in schizoaffective disorder. Instead, medications are chosen to treat the symptoms such as depression, restlessness, anxiety, mood swings, and hostility. A lot of people that are diagnosed with schizophrenic disorders tend to medicate by using other substances such as marijuana, alcohol, tobacco etc. People diagnosed with schizophrenic disorders have shorter lifespans due to the overload in stress and high suicide rates.

  7. The Primal Screamer

  8. A semi-autobiographical account of the life of Nick Blinko and his forming of his band Rudimentary Peni. The book is written in the form of a diary kept by a psychiatrist, Dr. Rodney H. Dweller, concerning his patient, Nathaniel Snoxell (Blinko), brought to him in 1979 because of several attempted suicides. Snoxell gets involved in the anarchist punk scene, and begins recording songs and playing gigs at anarchist centers.

  9. Rudimentary Peni Rudimentary Peni emerged from the British anarcho-punk scene in the early 1980s. Widely popular in Britain and in punk scenes everywhere today. They have released 11 cds. Pope Adrian 37thPsychristiatric is a concept album that was released in 1995. The majority of the album was written by Blinko while he was being detained in a psychriatic hospital. The subject matter of the album relates to the delusions Blinko was experiencing at the time, particularly the idea that he was “Pope Adrian 37th,” the second English pope in history.
