OVCA Review 2013
OVCA Background • Long history of supporting curling clubs and teams in the Ottawa valley through many bonspiels and programs. • Organize bonspiels – mixed, junior, men's, women's and competitive women's • Coaching, high school and junior programs • Financial support for clubs • Web hosting and information for curlers
Curling Environment Today is Challenging • Changing demographics – age, backgrounds. The older white male is not necessarily the future base. • Financial issues especially in rural areas • Volunteers are hard to get • Other associations and programs are very active and sometimes overlap OVCA programs • Rural vs. Urban needs • Elite vs. club curlers • Changing communication tools and expectations.
Overall Survey Results • The good news • Those that know the OVCA well have a good impression of services. • Curlers don’t seem to mind supporting the OVCA but … Therefore, need to engage curlers • Curlers want OVCA services • The bad news • Awareness of the OVCA and its programs is very low • Lots of confusion – bonspiels, clinics, OCA. • New curlers who don’t know about the OVCA rate its services poorly
Issues • Awareness – average rating of 2.5 out of 5 • Awareness is not what it needs to be – probably even be lower than the numbers indicate given that we didn’t survey a lot of less experienced curlers. • 22% rated it a 1 • 32% rated it a 2 • Marketing – how will the OVCA make their programs known. • Most suggested better promotion and awareness • A few suggested the OVCA go away • Communicate, communicate, communicate
Issues • Quality of Services • Could use improvements in all areas – bonspiels, funding, coaching, communication and support to teams • All importance ratings average under 3 except funding. Curlers need to feel that the OVCA is important to them. • Bonspiels – need adjustments to make them even better but overall are the most popular. It is the primary way curlers know the OVCA. • Funding – should limits or the approach be changed? More communication. • Training and Coaching – what are the target groups, schools, juniors, new middle age curlers, How do we get more reach?
Issues • Urban vs. rural • Similar views except the valley club want help for recruitment, funding and business plans. • Misperceptions of who benefits from OVCA programs. They each think the other gets funding preference. • Issues are slightly different • Volunteers • Financial problems • Bonspiels are less important to the valley
Issues • Increasing membership • All clubs would appreciate help in attracting new members but mainly the upper valley.
Issues • Club Coordination • Ice coordination was suggested by some. • Explore ways clubs can work together. Facilitate resolution of common issues – e.g. liquor license.
Comments from 277 Respondents • Programs Most Used by Curlers • None 115 41% • Bonspiels 85 31% • Funding 15 5% • Coaching 11 4% • Internet 8 3% • Programs Most Used by Clubs • Don’t know 109 39% • Juniors/Schools 16 6% • Funding 15 6% • What the OVCA should do and other suggestions • Overwhelmingly awareness and promotion • Some positive comments overall especially bonspiels
Other Observations • Many non responses on quality (30 to 43%) could mean they are not aware of OVCA services and could not judge. • Curlers with little awareness rated quality and importance very low. If the OVCA increases awareness, then perception of services would go up. • Differences related to experience – 10 yrs. and under were more likely to give lower ratings. • Presidents are slightly more knowledgeable than the general curlers. Still not as much as should be as presidents. • One response from club managers and low response rate for presidents. Communication problem with presidents and club managers
