Emigration rose sharply in 2004. Record 2.3 million Poles abroad in 2007. Dropped a bit in ‘recession’ back high again 2013 2.1 million Separates families mothers / daughters working abroad – miss each other. Children miss parents. SOCIAL Better paid jobs abroad but maybe not using their skills e.g. nurse becomes a cleaner – waste of talent / wasted investment ECONOMIC Impacts of emigration to EU on Poland Low pay and unemployment in E. Poland – better pay abroad Increasingly there is free movement of labour across the EU citizen – anyone can do this. Remittances – money returned home – boosts local economy – e.g. jobs in construction making new homes for richer migrant workers E+S Younger workers (from Warsaw) may leave for a few years intending to save money then return and start a business in Poland with their savings. Mainly younger adults leave – brain drain – ageing population. Polish business loses its best workers E+S
