  1. The Scientific MethodHow do Lenses Work? By S. Gleason

  2. Definition • Scientific method: basic steps that scientists follow in uncovering facts and solving scientific problems

  3. The scientific method is the only scientific way accepted to back up a theory or idea. This is the method on which all research projects should be based. The Scientific Method is used by researchers to support or disprove a theory.

  4. Basic Parts of Scientific Method • Question: Stating the problem • Research: Gathering information • Hypothesis: Suggesting an answer for the problem • Experiment: Performing an experiment to see whether the suggested answer makes sense • Analyze Results: Recording and analyzing the results of experiments or other observations • Stating conclusions: answer your question with the data you collected.

  5. QUESTION: Stating the Problem • How do lenses work?

  6. RESEARCH: Gathering Information • I know people wear glasses or contacts if they need help seeing. • I know some people are nearsighted and some are farsighted. • _____________________________________?

  7. Hypothesis • Lenses ___________________.

  8. Experiment • In your scientist cohorts, please bring your Investigator’s Log to the different experiment centers. • Write down your observations. • Remember to think like a scientist! • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSaDTqQ8XfA • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fD1544bM_c4

  9. Recording and Analyzing Data • Do the experiment many times • Record the data

  10. Conclusion • Lenses refract (or bend) and magnify light to help focus the image.
