  2. Sunita’s Story • In this scene, Sunita is a 10-year-old girl who comes to see one of her teachers, Mahua. She is upset and crying. You are Mahua. What would you do? How would you find out more?

  3. Sunita’s Story Sunita tells you she has just been in the art room with Radikah, the art teacher. Sunita tells you she accidentally spilled some blue paint and Radikah got very angry. She shouted at Sunita that she was stupid and useless, and then she threw a paint brush at her head. When she started to cry, Radikah told her to stop making a fuss and to clean up the paint. After she cleaned up the paint, Radikah told her to get out!

  4. Sunita’s Story • What did Radikah do wrong? • You are Mahua. How would you respond to Mahua now? • What should you NOT do?

  5. Sunita’s Story • You (Mahua) have just repeated Sunita’s story to Anjana, the Child Protection Officer. You told her exactly what happened and what actions you took. You tell her that you gave Sunita a hug and told her she was a brave girl. You fill out a report form.

  6. Sunita’s Story • What should Anjana, the Child Protection Officer, do next? • What should Anjana do with Radikah? • What actions could they take?

  7. Child Abuse • Based on this story, how should we respond to child abuse? • Have you ever been in a situation like Mahua, when you suspected child abuse? • What did you do? • How common is child abuse or neglect in your community? • How is child abuse or neglect dealt with?

Is child abuse and neglect a serious problem? • According to the World Health Organization, nearly 53,000 children are murdered each year. • Estimates are that 7% of boys and 14% of girls are sexually abused. • These figures may be low.   9. Main problem: Child abuse and neglect Effects (fruits) Depression, suicide Anxiety Smoking, alcohol and drug abuse Aggression and violence Risky sexual behaviors Stress, traumatic stress disorders Malnutrition, poor growth Learning problems Abusing others What can happen as a result?

  10. Look at the problem tree again. The main problem is child abuse and neglect. What is the solution? How can we prevent child abuse and neglect? How can we tackle the roots or causes of the problem? Looking for Solutions

  11. Past experiences of abuse or neglect Poor self-esteem Desire for control Not knowing Christ Broken families Poor family support Drug and alcohol abuse Lack of knowledge about children and child development What are some root causes?

  12. Pray! Home visits Building friendship and support of parents and families Sharing Christ; friendship evangelism Bible studies, growth groups, discipleship Teach about child care and child development Tackling the Root Causes: What can CHEs do?

  13. What can CHEs do? • Model healthy families • Children’s CHE • CHEPS; prenatal care; building a strong base • Support of families that have experienced neglect or abuse • Work with teens or youth

Broken families Alcoholism and drug abuse Poverty AIDS orphans Refugees Disasters Wars, political upheavals Malnutrition, leading to other problems Lack of access to education School problems Trafficking Forced to work Disabilities Child-led households What other social pressures do children face?
