The Infallibility of the Church. The purpose of the Church: Teach, Govern, and Sanctify it’s members. 2. Infallibility is a promise from Christ, kept by the Power of the Holy Spirit. This gives us certainty in the truth. (Jn. 14:26, 16:12-15)

The Infallibility of the Church • The purpose of the Church: Teach, Govern, and Sanctify it’s members. 2. Infallibility is a promise from Christ, kept by the Power of the Holy Spirit. This gives us certainty in the truth. (Jn. 14:26, 16:12-15) 3. The Church can never teach a doctrine that is contrary to what Christ taught.
Infallibility of the Pope • He must be teaching on Faith and Morals • He must be teaching the whole Church (not just a particular group) • He must be speaking “ex cathedra” (with the Authority given to him by Christ) • He must be intending to use his authority to pronounce an unchangeable and binding decision regarding faith and morals.
Reality Check: Pope • The Pope is NOT sinless (impeccable). • He is a man, subject to mistakes, and sin. • Only when he acts within his office as the Supreme Teacher, the Vicar of Christ, to teach the whole Church (faith and morals) is he protected by the Holy Spirit, free from error. • Ordinary Means (things infallible already) • Extraordinary (Solemn definitions of Dogma)
