Lesion Description • The lesion presents as a single, localized, black/blue discoloration on the right gingiva. The lesion is flat with well-defined boarders. Furthermore, the lesion is asymptomatic. In addition, x-rays reveal a radio-opaque object that is consistent with the location of the lesion seen clinically. The radio-opaque object is also present on previous x-rays.
Patient Dialog • Have you ever noticed the dark discoloration on your gums? Yes, it has been there a long, long time. Probably, over 30 years. • Has the spot ever changed in size or color? No, the spot has been the same for as long as I can remember. • Have you had any trauma to this area? No • Did you ever have a tooth that had a “silver”/amalgam filling near where the spot is now? Yes, when I had a tooth there, it had a filling.
Differential Diagnosis • Amalgam Tattoo • Hematoma • Melanoma
Provisional Diagnosis • Amalgam Tattoo Treatment options: Treatment is not indicated for an amalgam tattoo.
