  2. Key Question: Why do the cherry blossom trees blossom 6 weeks earlier in Kyushu than in Hokkaido?

  3. Starter Write the title of the lesson at the top of the post-it note/ card in front of you: Why do the cherry blossom trees blossom 6 weeks earlier in Kyushu than in Hokkaido? Underneath it write what you think is the answer to the question. Be as detailed as possible. If you do not know, take an intelligent guess and try to predict the answer! Now put this post-it/ card to one side.

  4. What is Climate? Climate is the average weather conditions of an area taken over a period of time, usually 30 years. Where can we get climate data? How can we illustrate climate data?

How to Draw a Climate Graph • Look at the data and decide on a scale for each set of data- temperature and rainfall • Label axis- x= months of the year, y= temperature, z= rainfall • Give your graph a title • Plot the rainfall figures as a bar graph- draw in pencil • Plot the temperature figures as a line graph. Each point should be a small cross in the centre of each month, with the centre of the cross being on the temperature figure you are plotting. When all are plotted, join them up with a smooth line. • When you have checked your graph you can shade it in- rainfall is blue, temperature is red. • Your finished work today should look similar to this!

  7. Climate Comparison Use the data from your graphs to complete the following questions • Which region has the warmest summer? What is the temperature? • What is the difference between the highest temperatures in the two regions? • Which region has the coldest winter? What is the temperature? • What is the difference in temperature between the two regions in the winter? • Which region has the greatest annual temperature range? (Temperature range= highest temperature – lowest temperature) • Which region has the wettest climate? What is the total annual rainfall of each region (all rainfall figure added up over the 12 months).
