  1. Senior project ideas related to wireless P. Rha (EB 513, x5329) • Samples of senior projects supervised in the past • people locator using WLAN • use Access Point locations and signal strengths to locate students connected to the campus WLAN • requires software programming and some knowledge of radio-wave propagation and triangulation. • Smart card reader/writer design (UM) • not directly related to wireless, but smart cards are used in GSM phones • involves mostly circuit design and working on PC interface • Hurri’canes shuttle location system (UM) • the system consists of sensors and radio transceivers located at each bus stop • sensors are used to sense when a shuttle bus arrives at a bus stop and radios are used to relay to other bus stops when this happens • locations of buses are then indicated on a map displayed at each bus stop • Autonomous ‘you have mail in your mail box’ reporting system. (SFSU) • sensors are used to monitor when something is inserted in a mail box • such an event is reported to a PC (can be wired or wireless interface) • an e-mail is sent to the owner of the mail box autonomously • a similar project supervised by Prof. Lask in Spring, 2002 • CDMA pilot signal generation with FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) (SFSU) • involves designing PN sequence generators and an FIR filter using either VHDL or schematic capture. No hardware is involved. • Microwave microstrip bandpass filter design (SFSU) • involves microwave circuit design, layout, and fabrication, followed by testing with a network analyzer. The milling machine in the wireless lab can be used to fabricate the circuit board. • Getting ideas for wireless related projects: • 1. using wireless technology to replace wires or cables is becoming more and more prevalent (e.g., WLAN, Bluetooth, wireless mouse, remote • controls …), so think about things around us that have not been affected by wireless technology yet, • 2. visit Radio Shack or similar electronics stores either on-line or in person to get ideas, • 3. search on the Internet under radio or wireless projects to get ideas. • Project Categories • Hardware Prototype Design – RF circuits, Digital DSP or FPGA based • Computer Simulation – using tools such as Matlab or SystemView • Computer Animation – using tools such as Matlab, Mathcad or Flash • Tools available • Software: Agilent’s ADS, Matlab, SystemView • Hardware: a Spectrum Analyzer, a Network Analyzer, a PCB milling machine
