DO NOW – Nov. 10, 2014 Imagine that the government completely collapses tomorrow and we need to create a whole new government. 1 – what would be some difficulties we would face if the government collapsed? 2 – what would be some things we would need to include in the new government? 3- what groups of people should be represented in the new government? 4 – what ideas would your new government be based on? (e.g. freedom? Justice? Equality?)

  3. This Week’s Learning Targets I can explain the reasons for the adoption and failure of the Articles of Confederation. I can analyze how the Articles of Confederation was based on one conception of freedom (i.e. freedom = states’ rights). I can describe the major issues debated at the Constitutional Convention including: • - the distribution of political power • - conduct of foreign affairs • - rights of individuals • - rights of states • - election of the executive • - slavery

  6. EXIT TICKET • Victoria, the French ambassador, arrives from Paris to tell you France needs the money it lent the colonies during the Revolution immediately. Can the Articles of Confederation solve this problem? Why/Why not?

  7. Mariah is a Loyalist who fled the colonies during the Revolution and has returned to reclaim her property in Dover, MA. According to the Treaty of Paris, she is entitled to her land. However, Massachusetts has passed a law that ignores the claims of former Loyalists. Mariah asks the Articles for the return of her property. Can the Articles of Confederation solve this problem? Why/Why not?

  8. A group of poor farmers in Massachusetts, led by Kalin, is angered by war debts, bad harvests and high taxes. When their failing farms are taken from them by a bank, they march on the state capital in protest. Massachusetts sends their soldiers to try to stop them and asks Congress for assistance. Can the Articles of Confederation solve this problem? Why/Why not?

  9. Both New Hampshire and New York want more territory for settlers within their states. New land would increase trade, profit and power for their individual states. They claim the same piece of land and appeal to the Articles to settle the dispute. Can the Articles of Confederation solve this problem? Why/Why not?

  10. Foreign countries do not respect American independence. Although the Treaty of Paris granted the United States all the land east of the Mississippi, Britain refuses to withdraw troops from the Ohio Valley. In addition, Spain closes New Orleans port to American farmers. Can the Articles of Confederation solve this problem? Why/Why not?

  11. Some individual states have abolished slavery in their constitutions. Confederation delegates Brianna and Davon propose an amendment to abolish slavery in the entire country. Can the Articles of Confederation solve this problem? Why/Why not?
