Christian Meditation – An Overview for Catechists and Parents

Our program of intentionally teaching Christian Meditation as a prayer practice is essentially experiential. Through regular meditation, students move from the things that enslave and destroy toward the Gospel Values of Liberation and Life in Abundance.
When the human heart is open and responsive to the movements of the Spirit, healthy spiritual formation inevitably occurs.
It is important to leave the world of progress and measurement behind when we talk about the life of the Spirit
Theophan the Recluse: “I will remind you of only one thing: one must descend with the mind into the heart, and there stand before the face of the Lord, ever present, all seeing with you. Prayer takes a firm and steadfast hold, when a small fire begins to burn in the heart. Try not to quench this fire, and it will become established in such a way that the prayer repeats itself, and then you will have within you a small murmuring stream.”
Abrose of Milan: “By silence have I seen many saved, by words, none.”
Saint Seraphim of Sarov: “Silence is the sacrament of the world to come, words are the weapons of this world.”
So we begin our Pilot:January – May 2014 Faith Formation Programs will be asked to DO meditation with the children/youth when they gather in the next five months.
Meditation can happen any place in the session. Some like TO HAVE IT IN THE BEGINNING as students come into the space. Some prefer the middle of the faith formation program. Some like it as a sending forth.
Sit very still with back straight. • Close your eyes gently. • Sing opening song together. • Say your word MARANATHA to yourself silently. Don’t visualize, but listen to the word as you say it. Let go of all other thoughts, images, and words. • Continue saying your word until you hear the bell. • Sing the closing song together. The Format is simple and easy to accomplish:
