Priority 1: Applied Research on Territorial, Development, Competitiveness and Cohesion • Objectives • Continued building of new evidence about European regions • Address major territorial challenges & consequences for regions • Provide comparable regionalised information & policy options for enhancing positive effects of trends, reacting upon negative ones • Support assessment of territorial impacts of policies • Support identification of potential synergies and/or conflicts between different policies and development opportunities
Priority 1: Applied Research on Territorial, Development, Competitiveness and Cohesion • Outputs expected • Inception report – approx. 12 weeks after kick-off meeting • Interim report – normally 6 months later • Draft final report – normally 12 months later • Final report – normally 4 months later • Deliveries expected • Presentations at ESPON seminars • Delivery of data and maps – in consultation with ESPON 2013 Database project • Delivery of models developed • Dissemination of project results • Each project is followed and advised by a Sounding Board

European seas in territorial development • Main policy demand for research • Developing indicators for and mapping of functions of the sea, activities on sea and their relation with development on land • Developing a typology for different patterns of ‘sea use’ • Identification of possible improvements of maritime and inland water • linkages • Governance structures for an Integrated Maritime Policy • Budget: max. 800.000 €
European seas in territorial development • Key research questions (summary): • What patterns of sea use and types of coastal regions can be • identified? • What opportunities for sustainable development, use and exploitation • can be identified in European seas? • What is the relationship between terrestrial and maritime planning and • what are best practices of maritime governance?
Services of General Interest in Territorial Cohesion and Development Main policy demand for research • Exploring territorial strategies to services of general interest • Definition of a set of (territorial relevant) indicators • Mapping the territorial distribution of services of general interest • Exploring the role and contribution of services in territorial development, competitiveness and cohesion • Budget:max. 1.000.000 €
