Visual Knowledge, Inc. Semantic Wikis Ontologizing the Ontolog Forum Where do Semantic Wikis fit? Conor Shankey CEO July 6, 2006
Overview • A key platform for the Ontolog Forum is the CIM3 Wiki • The Ontolog Forum is a Community of Interest/Practice • Overview of Semantic Wiki • Proposal: • 80 / 20 rule start by “ontoligizing” or structuring the most important things in the Forum • Utilize a semantic wiki to let the community convert unstructured knowledge into structured knowledge
The Ontolog Forum • Ontolog wiki is the central platform for organizing • Meetings/Presentations • Discourse • Information about people • Presentations, Documents, Audio Files, Ontologies • Focal Points appear to be regular presentations • Key “concepts” are all hyperlinked via wiki words • Works extremely well by letting community collaboratively integrate knowledge • Hard to find things of interest • if you don’t know where something is you resort to hunting and word searching
The original wiki idea • “A web site where anybody could create/edit a web page” • Structure • is not pre-determined • invented & evolved by community • neither top down or bottom up • Quick collaborative writing • Non-linear Hypertext
Additional Notions • Very simple markup for authors • Any page can be immediately revised assuming you have the right privileges • All changes are audited and transparent to the community • “Concepts” in text can immediately become active resources (pages/links) Simplicity 962 000+ articles
Benefits of the wiki idea • Distinct concepts or topics are built on the fly • Discourse forms around or in the context of a topic • Eliminates serialized document work flow • Team or community members can immediately see commentary in the context of a topic Consensus Agility Cohesion Speed
Limitations for Open Forum? • Topics or concepts lack semantics • A WikiWord is just a WikiWord • The forum is a flat network of anonymous concepts • Concepts lack type or the ability to describe common properties • Lack of common properties inhibits ability to • Search for events through a calender, date criteria, subject or presenter • Quantify value of resources based on usefulness, subject area, application area
Semantics to the rescue • Different concepts have different properties • Unique attributes like • date, start/end time, audience rating, etc. • Modification date • Unique Relationships • Presenter • Attendees • Creator • Resources related to subject area • Ability to organize concepts based on classification mechanism • Aggregation of complex concepts • “Is Part Of” types of relationships
Semantics to the rescue • Phrases having different meanings in different contexts Water on mars? Food Space Exploration
VK Semantic Wiki • Wiki concepts are just elements of an ontology • Now wiki concepts have formal properties • Enables semantic searching • Security becomes deeply integrated into wiki • Customized Wiki Views • Driven by ontology • Driven by library of visual templates • Integrated change management • Federated semantic wikis
Proposal – 80/20 rule • Start with the easy stuff • Events • People • “Black Box” Documents • Powerpoints, audio files, PDFs • Identify basic properties • Structure key items iteratively • Created faceted search ability to find most useful skeletal information • Let the community grade, rate and organize properties on resources, presenters, etc..
