  4. #3 Writing the GIST Basically, when we summarize, we take larger selections of text and reduce them to their bare essentials. So what are the bare essentials? It is the bare essentials as the gist, the key ideas, and the main points worth remembering. What do we really want to accomplish when we summarize? • Focus on the heart of the matter • Save the main ideas and crucial details that support them •Seek key words and phrases that manage to capture the gist Avoid taking the following routes: •Writing way too much (limit it to 15 to 20 words) • Writing down next to nothing or not writing enough •Copying word-for-word • Using redundant and extraneous examples
