  2. What’s your experience? How much do they need to know? What do you recommend to potentially good teachers who don’t know what a preposition is?

  4. Difficulties for teachers with weak LA • Inability to anticipate problems • Consequent inability to plan lessons at an appropriate level • Inability to deal with learner error or learners’ inquiries • May lose the confidence of learners. (after Thornberry, 1997)

  7. What the course involves Parts of speech Verb tenses, active and passive ‘Tricky’ parts of grammar – the future, the present perfect, modals, conditionals etc….

  8. The Pilot On-line classes in real time (Sunday evenings)

  10. Moodle platform gave access to: • the virtual classroom • the recordings of the classes • a quiz to consolidate learning • a forum with a weekly task to complete • a useful website

  11. Findings The idea was very attractive to people – 120 in a week signed up…. …and I had great feedback

  12. Your knowledge of the subject matter shone through time and time again. I gained a great deal from all your effort.

  13. The content was practical, interesting (you get extra points for that given the rather dry subject matter!) and challenging enough without discouraging us.

  14. ‘I tried reading some grammar books before the course, and to be honest, I may as well have been reading Russian...whereas having the course initially makes the reading of some of those books much better.’

  15. I loved this course! I’m teaching adults now and I honestly don’t know how I would have survived without it.

  17. Finding Live classes on-line didn’t attract many learners

  18. Timing Problems

  19. I don't think the course is really a problem. I think it's busy schedules, international time zone differences and personal priorities

  20. Other Problems

  21. I think I'm just lazy. I honestly had time last Friday, but I preferred to go out. I think it's the main problem of online education: it's too tempting to cancel classes or just miss them. • It's too easy to say yes to something that is free without considering all the implications, so this is the dilemma!

  22. Assumption Listening to the recordings will be a good second best.

  23. Finding The recordings were very popular, NOT just as a second best. • …just as effective as taking part.

  25. They are a fantastic resource, which I am glad to have had access to, especially as it was difficult for me to make the live sessions.

  27. The recordings helped to recap or look back at work I didn’t initially understand.

  28. Preference

  29. I prefer watching the classes at my own speed, pausing to take notes and flip through grammar books

  30. I found it hard to interject in the live session. I was conscious that I was starting from a low knowledge base and I did not want to hold up the class with silly questions. I found the recorded session suited my level of knowledge (low) better.

  31. I’m someone who prefers to work things out on my own rather than deduce things by liaising with peers…

  32. …I can think more clearly when knowingly not under pressure to deliver a ‘quick’ answer...

  35. [the videos] are a lot more accessible that an Elluminate recording – I can jump forward or back quite easily.

  36. The New Course Grammar for Language Teachers • Video presentations • Quizzes • Links to other websites/ reading • Forum for questions • (Useful websites for learners included)

  37. The new design just looks ten times better and is easier to access. I found it helped having learning points put into context with use of examples and quick quizzes which really helped solidify learning… Above all I felt in control of my learning.
