Unity. Not uniformity.
Today’s Goals • To establish a learning community. • To determine your goals for this class. • To establish why this class is important to you and your students. • To define culture, multiculturalism, and multicultural education. • To define expectations and assignments.
What is culture? The ideations, symbols, behaviors, values, and beliefs that are shared by a human group. It can also be defined as a group’s program for survival and adaptation to its environment. Banks & Banks, 2001, p. 428.
What is multiculturalism? A philosophical position and movement that assumes that the gender, ethnic, racial, and cultural diversity of a pluralistic society should be reflected in all of the institutionalized structures of educational institutions, including the staff, the norms and values, the curriculum, and the student body.
What is multicultural education? A reform movement designed to change the total educational environment so that students from diverse racial and ethnic groups, both gender groups, exceptional students, and students from each social-class will experience equal educational opportunities in schools, colleges, and universities.
Why is this class important?(Goals of Multicultural Education) • To help individuals gain greater self-understanding by viewing themselves from the perspectives of other cultures. • To provide students with cultural and ethnic alternatives. 3. To provide all students with the skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to function within their ethnic culture, within the mainstream culture, and within and across other ethnic cultures.
Goals of MCE 4. To reduce the pain and discrimination that members of ALL ethnic groups experience because of their unique racial, physical, and cultural characteristics. 5. To help students master essential reading, writing, and math skills. Banks, 2002, pp. 1-4
