National Industry Overview • 51,000 properties with 3.9 million hotel rooms, averaging 64% occupancy, and representing $93.1 billion in sales • Employing 1.6 million people full and part-time, paying 20.2 billion in wages and supporting another 7.6 million jobs indirectly • Currently the third largest retail industry
Florida Overview • Florida Division of Hotels and Restaurants reports: 1013 hotels with 166,432 rooms and 6676 motels with 200,375 rooms • The Florida Hotel Motel Association reports 4500 hotels/motels in the State representing 400,000 rooms and employing 850,000 people. The FHMA credits the discrepancy to the inclusion of small 1 and 2 bedroom apartments.

Florida - FDEP FDEP/EPA Region IV has sponsored the following: 1) 1991 Townsend/Earle Study 2) 1997-98 FDEP H/M Waste Reduction Project 3) 1999-2000 FDEP/SWIX H/M Waste Reduction Survey Project These projects were all co-sponsored by the Florida Hotel/Motel Association (FHMA)
