God Gives Us the Law Chapter 1
To KNOW GOD We can know about God through the natural world that surrounds us. (Take 3 minutes to: Make a list of all the natural things around you that tell you that God exists. ) We can know about God through his revelation: • Sacred Scripture is the Word of God written down by men under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit • Sacred Tradition is the entirety of the Word of God • The Magisterium: the teaching Church that safeguards revelation
Hierarchy • humans: above all other creation. Man is rational and has free will • animals: grow, live, have mobility and instincts but are not rational. They are driven by instincts. • vegetative creatures: have life, grow, & turn toward the sun - like trees & flowers • inanimate objects: rocks, metals, etc.
FREE WILLallows us to choose what to do The good man is free, even if he is a slave. The evil man is a slave, even if he is a king. -St. Augustine Amazing Grace My Chains are Gone Reflection—in words or pictures
GOD’s Master plan • God created us as free men and wills our freedom so that we might decide wholeheartedly in favor of the good. The more good we do, the freer we become. • Each person is made in God’s image and is precious in God’s eyes. Each person is a unique gift from God, and has a specific purpose. • God has a plan for each of us. Our talents help us to see God’s plan at work in our lives. • (Take 3 minutes to: Make a list of your special talents.)
The Creation Genesis 1:1-3:24 Because of Original Sin, there was a separation between God and man. There was nothing that man could do to make up for this great sin. A savior would be needed to make up for this sin (redemption) and reunite man and God (atonement) God wants us to be united with him forever so he has provided ways for us to be united with him (through covenants [solemn agreement], sacrifices, and worship). God gave us the Ten Commandments or Decalogue (“ten words”) so we can live in relationship with God and one another.
Ten Commandments • I am the LORD your God. You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve. • You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. • Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day. • Honor your father and your mother. • You shall not kill. • You shall not commit adultery. • You shall not steal. • You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. • You shall not covet your neighbor's wife. • You shall not covet your neighbor's goods.
Relationship with God 1. What does the First Commandment tell us to do? It commands us to adore God alone. 2. What is forbidden by the Second Commandment? It is forbidden to use the Name of God in any profane or irreverent way, as by cursing and blasphemy. 3. Why did God command the Sabbath to be kept holy? Because He completed the work of creation in six days and rested on the seventh day. The Sunday celebration of the Lord's Day and his Eucharist is at the heart of the Church's life. ‘Sunday is the day on which the paschal mystery is celebrated in light of the apostolic tradition and is to be observed as the foremost holy day of obligation in the universal Church.’ [CIC, can. 1246 § 1]” (C.C.C. # 2177)
Relationship with others 4. What is ordained by the Fourth Commandment? To love and respect our parents, and to obey them in all that is not sinful. “Hear my child, your father’s instruction, and do not reject your mother’s teaching.” [Prov. 1:8] “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother - this is the first commandment with a promise.” [Eph. 6:1-2] “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities; for there is no authority except from God, and those authorities that exist have been instituted by God.” [Rom. 13:1] 5. What is the Fifth Commandment? "Human life is sacred because from its beginning it involves the creative action of God and it remains for ever in a special relationship with the Creator, who is its sole end. God alone is the Lord of life from its beginning until its end: no one can under any circumstance claim for himself the right directly to destroy an innocent human being." [CDF, instruction, Donum vitae, intro. 5] (C.C.C. # 2258) 6. What is the Sixth Commandment? Adultery is the sin of a married person who is unfaithful to his or her marriage vow. The common term used is "cheating" on one's marriage partner.
7. What is forbidden by the Seventh Commandment? It is forbidden to take what justly belongs to another. It is forbidden to destroy or injure the property or possessions of another. 8. What is the meaning of the Eighth Commandment? It means that we must not tell lies, especially about other people. 9. What is forbidden by the Ninth Commandment? (To covet means to desire, to long for, to aim after.) All sensual, impure thoughts and desires are forbidden; such things are sinful if they are willfully and deliberately kept in one’s mind. 10.What is forbidden by the Tenth Commandment? It is forbidden to envy the good fortune of another, and to desire seriously to have what belongs to another.
Covenant • Covenant: Binding oath that unites two parties in a relationship. • Throughout history God has wanted a relationship with us that is why He gave us the Ten Commandments. • What are some examples of covenants that we have in our everyday lives?
OLD testament covenants • Adam and Eve—Gen 3:15 • Noah—Gen 8:20-22 • Abraham—Gen 22:15-18 • Israel moves to Egypt—Gen 46: 1-4 • Moses and the Exodus—Ex 19:5 • Reign of David—2 Sam 7:13-17 • Kingdom Divides—1 Kings 12:1-17 • Fall of the Northern Kingdom—2 Kings 17:1-8 • Fall of the Southern Kingdom—2 Kings 25:1-7 • Return from Exile—Ezra 1:1-4 and then • Jesus—Mark 14:22-25
Laws of Jesus Beatitudes - Mt. 5:1-12, 17 The story of the rich young man - Mt. 19:16-21 Great Commandment - Luke:10:27 Beyond the duty of the law is the spirit of the law: LOVE
The beatitudes "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you.Gospel of St. Matthew5:3-11
New and everlasting covenant • Jesus is the Savior promised by God to Adam and Eve • He redeemed man by dying on the Cross • By his death and Resurrection he offered atonement and reunited man and God through grace • He established his covenant at the Last Supper by giving his disciples His Body and Blood in the Eucharist and fulfilling this self-gift on the Cross • We enter this covenant through Baptism and commemorate Jesus’ sacred meal and sacrifice at Mass.
Conscience • Our ability to know and judge what is right or wrong. • The word conscience comes from the Latin words con, which means “with” and scientia, which means “knowledge.” • Everybody has a conscience. It is our moral guide or “inner sanctuary” where God speaks to him.
What is sin? Original Sin (inherited) and Actual (by choice) • We sin when we choose to disobey the moral law • We can sin by thought, word, deed, and omission. • Mortal sin destroys charity in the heart of many by a grave violation of God’s laws; it turns man away from God, who is his ultimate and and his beatitude, by preferring an ingerior good to him. • Venial sin allows charity to subsist, even though it offends and wounds.
Mortal vs venial For a sin to be mortal: • It must be a serious matter. • We must know it is wrong. • We must freely choose to do it. For a sin to be venial: • It must be less serious matter, though we may have knowledge and free will. • It may be serious, but we are without full knowledge of its seriousness and/or we do not fully consent to the action.
“And if you obey the voice of the Lord your God, being careful to do all his commandments which I have commanded you this day, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth.”Deuteronomy 28:1 God made man for a purpose: Heaven We must do good and avoid evil. We are designed for this and it is written in our hearts. Because of the effects of the Fall we are prone to sin. However, we have free will. We can choose good or evil. To be truly free, we must choose to do good.
