Copy Catalogers assume more responsibility for complex cataloging • “Easier” cataloging (from PromptCat) processed through computer program script • Loss of librarian positions spreads more difficult cataloging among copy catalogers • Non-book material cataloging steadily increasing • More special collections cataloging as new receipts diminish (due to budget cuts and shelf-ready processing)

  4. Dichotomy between global and local catalog begins to blur • Concept of WorldCat Local: catalog once for local and global access. • Success of OCLC Expert Community Project, introduced in 2009. Capabilities for enriching OCLC master records extended beyond participants in OCLC Enhance, PCC BIBCO and CONSER programs. • Why should expert copy catalogers be restricted to local catalog?

Training Opportunities for Copy Catalogers • Catalogers Learning Workshops (training materials freely available online at http://www.loc.gov/catworkshop/courses, or through Cataloger’s Desktop subscription): • Fundamentals of Library of Congress Classification and • Basic Subject Cataloging Using LCSH

  8. Enriching and Enhancing the OCLC Master Record • General Guidelines • Do not replace data in records for which you do not have the piece in hand. • Do not remove information from a record unless the information is clearly in error and cannot be corrected.

  9. When in doubt, don't. • Never remove data from a record unless it is clearly incorrect. • Leave subject headings and call numbers in the record unless they are clearly wrong. • Use judgment on the determination of predominant subject emphasis.

  10. Enriching • Encoding level(Elv) blank, 1 or 4 w/out 042 pcc, I, L • Record lacks classification, subject headings or 505

  11. Minimal • Encoding level(Elv) K, M, 2, 3, 4 (w/out 042), 5, 7 • Bring record up to encoding level I • Always change fixed field Elv to level I. • Required fields in level I: 007 (if required) 020 028 034 041 240 246 300 (complete a-c) 4xx/8xx 5xx 6xx • Always correct any typos and include all necessary variable and fixed fields (i.e.: 024, 043)

  12. Enhance • Any encoding level (Elv) w/out a 042 pcc, except: E, blank, or 1 (enrichments only) • Cannot change the encoding of level 8. Make changes but do not change encoding to I. • Use to add 2nd 090 (check OCLC enhance rules), additional subject headings, and for cleaning up the record • Can correct call number if clearly in error. Do not delete data unless incorrect in substance: i.e. Subject doesn’t apply

  13. When to Enhance Credit Earned • Can add the following fields if not already in the record or edit if not correct: • Credit Earned: 024 090 (2nd) 490/830 505 520 530 6xx 856 060, 096 (if scheme not already in record)

  14. When to Enhance No Credit Earned • Can add the following fields if not already in the record or edit if not correct: • 300 7xx 2xx • Always make improvements to or correct typos in access points
