Became a royal colony (governor appointed by king) in 1624

  3. II. Plymouth (1620) • A. Settled by radical reformers (Separatists) who rejected the King’s authority in religious matters • 1. fled England for the Netherlands • 2. Mayflower Compact (1620)—male passengers agreed to create a government for themselves • a. town meetings—all decisions affecting the colony were decided by the Church members (direct democracy)

Massachusetts Bay (1629) • A. founded by reformers within the Anglican Church who were persecuted for their religious beliefs (Puritans) • B. formed the Massachusetts Bay Company and moved its headquarters to New England • C. Great Migration (beginning 1630)—over 15,000 Puritans left England for Massachusetts
